Short Version: totally new design, basically complete. just looking for comments

New site for my organization, that I've been coding in my spare time. It's finally ready (almost) for launch, and I wanted some outside thoughts. This is a way for my org (HEROES) to attract new volunteers, as well as provide current volunteers with more information. The application will end up being the most frequented page I'm sure. The goal is to come across as more of a professional organization, since the current site is very dated in my opinion.

What my boss wanted in a new site was "clean, subtle, nothing in-your-face just easy and obvious." I think the new site does that well, but all thoughts appreciated! The color of the logo is still in flux, everything else graphically is pretty set; I would still appreciate your comments on colors and design.

THINGS THAT WILL BE CHANGED/FIXED
Will delete admin & xhtml in footer; currently there for testing purposes.
Gibberish in AdoptASchool - will become actual content. The length is approximately correct.

WOULD APPRECIATE HELP WITH
The colors of the boxes in Adopt; what do you think?
Cross-browser testing. The site works perfectly in Firefox 1.5 and IE6 (except the app). If you could provide feedback on success/failure in other browsers/os', I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for all the help!

and every single person in the office would agree with you :) unfortunately we can't change it

It's very... pastel. Maybe if the yellow were a bit more orangey?

The bottom text box on the "adopt" page is out of alignment and the text ("Sponsor Technology Learning Labs") spills out of the box.

If you're going for a fixed width, I'd center it. There's a big right side gap at 1024x768.

Overall it looks pretty good, definitely more professional than the current version. :)

BTW, what is an "excelling school"? I would think that schools that are excelling really don't need help as much as the ones that are doing poorly, like on standardized tests.

I'll play around with that, I'm somewhat limited by the logo but it could be better.

Hmm, doesn't do that on mine, the header part just expands down. The alignment I know is off, I'm waiting until I actually have the real text in there to fix it since I don't know what the final width will be.

My boss is planning on coming up with something to go on the right, I don't know what she has in mind. Probably just text. I actually prefer the left-aligned look for this page however. Makes the header better for one thing, but I just prefer it overall.

Thanks :) The idea was to encourage people to make a difference in the schools. I honestly think they came up with HEROES first, and figured out the acronym later. Wasn't around back then.

donations box on the adopt page is looking messed up on my screen.

Looks good, nice, clean, simple, and gets the point across.

As far as making the yellows more orangey - i'm not sure how that would look...

It's supposed to stand out from the rest of the page, yes, because it's a highlight of sorts. But, orange? I do agree, however, that the yellow is a bit "awkward" - I would just suggest experimentation.
