Sins of a Solar Empire II

Agreed. I don't understand why it matters. Nothing wrong with Epic.

Where to begin? I bought the first game direct from the devs/publisher aka Stardock. DRM free. I own Rebellion on Steam and GoG. If they don't bring it to Steam and GoG... well, they can get bent. Epic won't do modding nor multiplayer right. Modding is what has kept this game alive and letting them make money selling DLCs for the game in the past 5-6 years.

I was all stoked when I saw this announcement and instantly saddened that it was Epic exclusive. Stardock is clearly in trouble, this isn't their first Epic exclusive. GalCiv4 is on Epic only for now.

That's... a whole heap of assumptions, yikes.

I'm excited for it. Won't be a day-1 kind of purchase, but, I'll definitely pick it up and play the hell out of it.

Who cares?
I have no desire to manage my games through multiple different platforms, most of which inferior to Steam at this point. I think their "exclusive" model is generally shady and bad for consumers. The fact that Tencent owns %45 of Epic doesn't give me the warm fuzzies either.

It is what it is, I'm not the kind of person to run around shouting how Epic is the devil. I just don't buy games on their platform. I understand the lure for developers.

The one upside of getting old and playing fewer games is that I have no problem waiting for exclusivity deals to expire or just skipping games entirely. I have a lot of nostalgia for Sins from years of Lan parties, but it's not going to kill me to ignore it entirely. My only major gripe with the exclusivity period is the games then launch on Steam at full price, which I'm not paying for a game that released 6+ months ago. So then I have to wait another 6+ months for a Steam sale lol.

My problem with Epic is cloud saves, they always fuck up and I play games on multiple devices.

Yup, it gives the game makers a second shot at full price sales.

I cannot wait for this to be fully released. I'm terrible at these games but it's oddly satisfying watching my empire getv it's teeth kicked in 🤣

I have. It's a very very early alpha at this stage but still surprisingly fun for a couple of games. Mostly a technical preview showing what their new core neutral engine is capable of and some of the new ideas they have in store, like orbiting planets and dynamic space lanes. On my system it ran flawlessly. People have been having fun pushing the engine to its limits spawning insane amounts of ships. I particularity likes how every projectiles and turrets seems to be simulated now. The potential for an amazing game is there. The mods that will come out of this will be insane.

One of the reason they gave for releasing such an early alpha is to get as much feedback as possible as early as possible in the development cycle. So if you'd like to influence this game, now's a good time to hop in. Their Discord is very active with dev interactions.

Never played the first one but this looks promising though maybe too complex for me as a casual gamer
It's really not too complex. I hate RTS games, but the time is granular and controllable in the game so you can manage any sized battle. It takes a while to get into it, but once you know how the systems function and you're familiar with the UI, the game is excellent. While the core gameplay is interesting, it's the mods over the years that have brought all the value to the game.

Sins of a Galactic Empire - Star Wars spanning every conceivable era of time, every faction from the EU and custom built models and sound effects. It's hard to beat, but the old game engine would choke there was so much content in it.
Lots of great Star Trek Mods for it

Old engine would die in large galaxies and long games. Have high hopes for this 64 bit engine.

It's already mod friendly. Hope the authors of the older content from the first game update them for the new engine.

I'm trying to figure out why I should pick this one up vs. Stellaris which I already have.

I remember getting a little fun out of the first one (SoaSE) long ago. But the older I get, the worse I am at RTS games.

The reason why I picked it up is because it's a modern engine. You control the pace of the game. It's got LAN play built in, that's a rarity.

You do you, but this is a casual game that anyone can learn to play. Stellaris is a bloated monstrosity that I've never revisited after I put it down.

Star Trek mods do sound intriguing. Wishlisted!
The big Star Trek mod for the original game was called Sins of the Angels if I recall that correctly. It was so good, it had a dominion war faction, Borg, Federation, Klingons, Romulans, System destroyers like the doomsday device, Ferengi ships, the starbases looked incredible. You should check out the original game, it's probably pennies on the dollar these days.

The other popular Trek mod ended up being the Armada3 one.

I played Sins II for a couple hours last night. I fired up a custom generated (Mod) map I pulled off the modders link on Epic. I'm sure the modding community will be vibrant on Steam Workshop at some point.

FYI - 250 Systems would have crushed the old engine. It ran like butter on my rig. Couldn't believe it. Graphics are excellent and I will be getting the expansion pass once I migrate to Steam... More on that below.

I am ecstatic and happy to announce that Stardock has officially said that they will be providing Steam links for everyone that preordered and beta tested the game (acquired prior to June this year) on Epic. That's a rare show of good will and support for the people that backed this on Epic over two years ago.

As for Modding, Stardock hired modders from vibrant modding community of the original game and it's enabled day one and gonna keep on rocking. Good chance we see some of our favorite mods moved over to this game. Can't wait!

Bah, I guess I will get the basic version. I can't abide paying $80 or so for the premium edition with vague dlc's in the future. They did some shady things with the dlc's on GoG for SinsRebellion Ultimate edition in the past two years. There are some decent discounts on official key sites and humble is $32 if you're a member with the full 20% discount active.

Some of the old mod authors have already said they are looking into it, so yeah the chances we'll get the best total conversion mods ported over to Sins 2 is extremely high. Plus, as you said, a couple of current devs on Sin 2 were actually modders too, so it's looking real good on that front.

Here's the link to get free Steam copy for Epic buyers: https://www.sinsofasolarempire2.com/keytransport
Gotta do it fast though since it's only available until mid September.

Main thing about the 4 DLCs will be the Campaign and the 4th Race. Sins has never had a campaign, so that'll be new to the franchise. It's a pretty frequent request from the community as well. Plus, they built the game engine with that in mind. Expectations are high on that front I would say.

You can actually upgrade to the premium/season pass now using Stardock webstore, since there's currently no way to do that on Steam itself: https://www.sinsofasolarempire2.com/store

Thanks, I found it myself digging through RammaStardock's Posts. Yeah, I jumped right on that and then backed the expansions for StarDock right after I registered the Steam key and then plugged that in too.

I think what is confusing some folks is that the DLC pass doesn't change the game in any way, as they had nothing ready for it yet. So, its a faith thing or a wait and see thing for others.

the modding community is already pretty active, can't wait to see the big conversion mods come around.

Went thru moddb this weekend as apparently my sins mods are on the old system. It has been longer than I thought since I played it. STA3 was the main Trek mod I played. Echoes of War is another Trek mod that adds on to STA3. Ages of the Federation is a Trek mod that starts with Enterprise (Xindi show up) then thru the Original Series era of Trek. The best Star Wars one I've tried is Star Wars Interregnum, it adds some new things to the base game. Sacrifice of Angels2 as mentioned earlier is linked below, it is a future Dominion War2 with Borg in it.

I never did get to try the Halo or SG1 mods. I see there is a Yamato one too now, even Babylon5 one.

Interregnum was good (I call that one the Heroes/Thrawn Boner Mod), but the faction completion and the effects and diversity of foes was better (IMO) with Sins of a Galactic Empire the modding team ported in all the individual craft noises from the first six movies + EU content was excellent. There's also a Thrawn's Revenge one out there that I didn't care so much for some of the changes they made to capital ship combat (making a Star Destroyer turn to broadside when it can already fire all it's Fore, Port and Starboard weapons forward due to the angular hull...) that's a port of Thrawns Revenge from Empire at War. Which people are still developing for. They may have updated the engine for EAW and all but it's still clunky, the UI is super dated and I hate the ground combat portions.

Played Sacrifice of Angels and always thought that one was incredible but active development for it ended some time ago. Nice to hear STA3 kept getting love and addons. I liked that one too.

Hope all of it gets ported over to Sins II. I played a game with like 500+ Systems (for 5 + hours) on a mega map and it ran with all the mods I could cram into it and never slowed down. That was impossible on the old Sins. I also like that when it encounters an error it tells you what failed and then allows you to continue to run the game. It's pretty stable and smooth overall.
