In My quest to replace my aging XP 1700+ , I've come to a cross road with my upgrade plans. Time is not on my side, monthly salary and child due to arrive in October. So its either up grade now or don't. With the current state of things, I might be asking the Impossible.

Which of the following choices would offer the best upgrade path. (s939 is not an option due to cost) I'm upgrading my case, ps, and moving to sata. so the budget is tight enough as is.

Choice 1a.
1gig OCZ ECC Reg DDR 400 ram (512X2)
Asus SK8V (s940)
Operton 148

Choice 1b
1gig OCZ ECC Reg DDR 400 ram (512X2)
Asus SK8V (s940)
Operton 146

Choice 2a
1gig OCZ DDR 400 Ram (512x2) ELDCPE
MSI Neo Platinum (s754)
A64 3400+

Choice 2b
1gig OCZ DDR 400 Ram (512x2) ELDCPE
MSI Neo Platinum (s754)
A64 3200+

This computer is used mainly as my Gaming/Programming/CAD Rig, I literally bang my head against the desk trying to sort things out.

Now for some prices just so ya'll have the same info I have
Operton 148 404
Operton 146 279
A64 3400+ 404
A64 3200+ 279
MSI K8 Neo Platinum 149
Asus SK8V 179
OCZ ECC Ram 311
OCZ Ram 269

Now why even think about the Operton Cpu. Operton 148 + 248 Review
SK8V Review

Thank you for your Time

Choice 2b seems to be the best bang for the buck of all those listed. It's too bad they don't have the 3100 or 3300 939 out yet as that would definitely be the way to go.

definantly not a simple question

I'm not sure what sort of stuff you REALLY do but I'm going to suggest that you stick with socket A.
