I have a DFI Infinity P965-S and a Pentium D955 EE. I would like to clock it up to 4.0GHz and am not sure which would be best to raise as my multiplier is unlocked. Should I work with the FSB or just raise the multiplier. I am running a 1:1 ratio and would like to stay there. I am also running 2 gigs of Corsair PC8500C5D Dominator ram and my machine has excellent cooling including 1 x 120mm(exhaust) , 120mm PSU exhaust , and 3 x 80 intake. I am also using the Ultra Chilltec. I don't think I should have any cooling issues at all.:D So, raise the FSB or the multiplier? and maybe explain why one is better than the other. Thanks.
 
What is your current multiplier and FSB at ? I am trying to determine what you memory speed is and that has a lot to do with if its better to raise the mulitplier or the FSB. In general raising the FSB will OC your memory too for more performance but of course there is a limit to all good things and how much you can OC your memory before you have to loosen the timings or raise its working voltage is critical to the decision of which way to go in your specific case.

You need to experiment with both methods to understand what the CPU and the memory can do individually.

Lower mulit and raise FSB and boot into memtest, that will test memory as the cpu should be running slower and be taken out of the picture.

Once you determine what the memory can do, you lower the fsb and run highest possbile mulitplier, then start raising the FSB to find out what the CPU is capable of.

Then you can decide, you probally will end up with using both methods a higher mulitplier with a minor FSB boost, but you will just have to see for yourself.
 
Well as per above you need first determine what your memory will do. to reach 4.0GHz you are going to need a FSB of 307-308 up from your present 266.

drop the mulit to 10 this will run your cpu at way under stock, start raising FSB in 10 MHz increments booting into a memtest86+ CD (make the CD the default boot device, this way you will not screw up your windows install.) Let it run just the very first test. reboot and raise FSB till you get errors. Loosen your memory timings to 5 5 5 15 and continue until errors crop up again, this is probally your limit on FSB due to the memory, back off 10MHz and retry letting memtest run 1 full pass through all the tests to make sure there are no memory errors. I there are errors back off 5 Mhz and try again until no errors at least 1 full pass.

raise mulit to 11 see if it will boot
raise mulit to 12 see if it will boot
raiase mulit to 13, pray, see if it will boot.
 
Ok. Thought I'd give an update. My multiplier could only drop to 12 so I just left it at 13. Strange since it states that it can go to 60! Anyways , CPUZ tells me that this is where I'm at after running through MEMtest 2 full times on the last FSB increase.

This is all at a 1:1 divider. I will be at 4.0GHz within the next fsb adjustment or two. When I get there , should I just leave it at that or should I even the increase out between the multiplier and the fsb? Also , if memtest fails , will it just reboot? I have seen this ram at 500+MHz so I'm not too worried about it but would like to know.
Not sure if this matters but the ram is running at 1.9v and is rated at 2.2v - all seems fine and this is the voltage found by the mobo. The cpu is running at 1.29v and is rated for 1.4v. This amount has been adjusted by me initially to be able to run the ram and cpu at the 1:1 divider and get through Orthos. It was throwing and error and then I found out about v-droop on this board and had to compensate. After all of my clocking is done , I plan on running Orthos over night and then run memtest overnight and hope for the best. Any other suggestions? Oh yeah , I'm running about 17*C idle temp on the cpu. will post the load temp when running Orthos.
