Should I get a new desktop computer?

I will be starting university in September and every student must lease a notebook from the university for $1480 CDN a year.

The specs of the notebook are:
model: IBM R40
speed: 2.0 Ghz
memory: 256MB
disk: 40GB
media: CDRW/DVD
screen: 14 inches 1024 x 768
mouse: SuperNav/TrackPoint
network capability: 56K Modem, wired Ethernet, wireless (802.11b)
sound card: Sound Blaster compatible,
speakers: 2 built-in speakers (stereo)

The notebook is replaced every 2 academic years by the university and it will include all software we would need for different courses.

My current desktop computer is (as my P3 600 broke a while ago):
cpu: 1-Intel Pentium II, 267MHz, 512KB
memory: 384MB SDRAM
video card: ATI Technologies, Inc. 3D RAGE PRO AGP 2X
hard drive: 20 gig
media: CDRW/DVD

If I don't get a desktop computer I will probably just get a nice large LCD monitor and a keyboard and mouse to hook up when I'm using the computer in my residence room.

I'm wondering whether I should purchase a brand new desktop computer or if I should use the notebook that I will be getting even though it's not really a desktop replacement (I think..). I would like to game and do other things like video/audio editing and stuff.
