Shipping a computer cheaply?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but there didn't seem to be a more appropriate forum. ~_~

Anyway, I'm heading off to college in California in less than two weeks. I live in New Hampshire, so I'm taking much more than my clothes and a few things I want in my dorm room with me. I do, however, want to take my computer.

The problem is, I went over to the FedEx store (without any case dimensions, unfortunately - I have an Antec P180), and they gave me an estimated price for a 17"x17"x7" (give or take) case. They said with normal one-week shipping, the price for shipping just the tower would be $100. @_@ I asked why it was so much, the woman said it was mostly because of the packing materials - bubble wrap and so forth.

So, the problem I'm faced with is shipping a P180 with various components inside (as anyone who owns the case will tell you, it's not exactly a lightweight case) and my Samsung SyncMaster 940BW (19" flatpanel) for as cheap a price as I can manage.

I'm aware I should be taking out certain components that may get damaged in transit, but which components specifically? The hard drive is obvious in case the computer gets lost (boy, that would suck), but anything else? I've got a Zalman 7700Cu cooling my processor, and that thing's a rather large pain to take off and put back on; would I be safe in just packing my computer on its side? Can I trust that heatsink to stay on?

Thanks for any advice anyone can give me. If you need to know anything else - actual case dimensions, monitor dimensions, what else I'll be bringing - let me know.

You could either take the HSF off, or stuff some anti-static padding into there to help keep it from coming off. You can't bring it with you on the plane? Toss it in a huge box and make sure it doesnt weigh over 70lbs, check it in at the airport. All your other stuff should fit in a second box, lol -- IIRC, you're allowed 2 boxes.
