I'm currently considering buying a inspiron 9400 (canadian here) and in the customization options there are a few memory options that confuse me (noob here).

the processor in the system i'm looking at is the T2500 with a 667 fsb, the memory options include 1gb@533, 1gb@667, 2gb@533, and 2gb@667.

I know more memory is better, but would I be better off with the 2gb@533 or the 1gb@667? I don't think I can afford the 2gb@667 or I'd go for that immediately.

A review I read recently mentioned that the performance difference between the 533 and 667 memory speeds was significant but nothing to write home about. Will I be crippling my system with the lower memory speed or will the increase in quantity more than make up for it?

bump.
i was hoping to order the laptop today, so if anyone knows any reason why using the 2gb of 533mhz ram vs the 1gb of 667mhz ram is a bad idea please let me know.

Thanks in advance and sorry for being so pushy while asking a favour :p

Don't do it at dell. That's a no-brainer. Newegg will deck it out for you at half the price.

I just bought 2GB 667 for $165 shipped

since i can't purchase items from newegg (won't accept canadian credit cards) I took at look at memory prices locally.

cheapest i could find was $270 canadian for 2gb of 667 or $200 for 2gb of 533.

dell's upgrading my laptop from 1gb of 533->2gb for 90 canadian...which is cheaper than buying 1 stick of 1gb 533 memory locally...

i guess in the future i might decide to purchase faster memory but until then, thanks for the advice.

Ouch. That sucks. Oh well. At least you'll be up and running soon :D
