Ok is this possible...

I've seen it on laptops before. Basically I want to increase the desktop area of my screen. Ie, so that it actually scrolls. I've seen this on laptops that boast 1600x1200, but when you set it, you actually only see 1280x1024 on teh screen at any one time, but if you move the mouse to the edge of the screen you can move it around.

Anyone know what i'm talking about?
 
Yes, and if it is possible, you would find the options for it in your video card's drivers.
 
Right-click your desktop and choose "Properties" form the menu, then choose the "settings" tab at the top of the dialog box that appears. Press the "Advanced" button, and then look for and press a tab labled "Monitor". This is where it may be different on different systems; You may be able to unckeck the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" option, and press OK. When it returns you to the "Settings", you may have more available screen resolutions. Depending on your monitor, monitor drivers, video card, and video drivers, selecting an oversized option may give you the panning desktop. On some systems (usually CRT), you may simply get a distorted display.
 
Yeah I can get my comp to do it at home. It is kinda of a nice feature although I would not use it full-time. I wish you could scroll the screen with possibly the arrow keys all while still moving the mouse around, that way you dont have to drag the mouse around to the side to move it. would be good for photochopping huge photos.
 
Well the main reason I'm interested is I'm thinking of moving to a laptop from a pc. However most the widescreen laptops are only 800 or so high. Whereas I do a lot of photo editing and would like to keep all my tool bars scrolled down the left and right of my page (photoshop).

Cheers for teh resolution tip. Sure I can have a play with that and get something working well. Currently on my desktop pc if i do that the actual resolution decreases but screen area increases. Must be a way to tweak.
