School Notebook

I'd suggest the acer. Both have a similar price and the acer seems to offer a little more. :D
I'd get an extra battery too if I was you. :D

i'm gonna have to say the acer if thats your price range, even though i myself have a badass T42

looks like that T42 is a little more aged than the acer...acer has better specs, while it won't have AS good build quality of the ibm, I would suspect the Acer quality is good enough

I got an acer for my Senior year at college here, and I'm loving having it, but I treat it really well. I have an old old ibm 701c that's gotta be slmot 10 years old that still runs fine. Realy depends what you need it for...but if you want to do any kind of real gaming, get the Acer. However, the one I got was a little cheaper, and has a widescreen and a dvd burner...I think newegg has a similar model but not the exact same one.

any intention of having a desktop as well? Something to game on?

if so, definitely the IBM. (also, there's a guy on the [M] that's selling his w/ 256mb RAM for 1000/1.2gb RAM for 1200 bucks...similar model. You might want to take a look at it).

If you do get an IBM, be sure to get the extended battery as well, and a docking station. They're very nice to have if they're your primary system.

I'd go with the acer, since you want to occasionally play a game or two that IBM will NOT suffice! It's too bad that IBM never puts good graphics in they're notebooks, but again they are selling notebooks to a different audience.

I would go with acer. Just because it has better specs...

Like these guys are saying... if you don't require games or the extra memory go the way of IBM just for the simple fact that those things are built like tanks. In general IBM laptops are more solidly built and any other laptop. I've always liked the feel of them.

If you don't have a good desktop system to game on then you'll end up going the way of the Acer, just for the simple fact that it contains superior components (mostly, more memory and Radeon 9700 graphics).

You IBM guys are crazy. Go for the acer. It has much much better specs (double ram, video card is 5x better, and a dothan 2mb L2 cpu - the ibm does NOT have a dothan), and acer laptops have build quality that rivals ibm.
