RX 480 Inventory

Guys, price no longer determines what is budget or not if you factor in relative performance. Assuming we all own either a 1080p or 1440p monitor, why spend $400 extra for a GTX 1080? It just doesn't make sense to pay that huge extra amount just to continue to play at 1080 or 1440. Just my thought............

Judge for yourselves, this is my last take on this topic.

If you ask me, the $200 isn't budget, it's low-mid. Budget is the $100-150 range, close to impulse buy. $200 isn't much but it's a lot for many people, hence the low range, not budget. $250 is /low-mid. $300 is mid. $350 is mid-high. $400 is high. $500 is enthusiast.

Of course the frame of reference changes depending on how much money you make, thus the value of money is different to each of us. For the great majority, though, $200 on a piece of hardware ain't anything close to budget. It's low but still substantial. If you make ~$2000 a month, that's %10 of your salary. That ain't a budget purchase, that's ten percent of your monthly spending power. That's a lot. And that's assuming you make 2K a month. The great majority of people hover around low 1K a month. Suddenly that $200 is ~%20 of your monthly living cost. That ain't budget, by a mile.
Not to argue what is and is not budget but the average monthly income in the US $3,769. People who buy these kinds of products to upgrade their computers tend to have disposable income. When you consider a brand new console tends to cost 300-500 I do see this as a budget buy, but that is me personally.

price still determines tier, you are arguing a losing battle here. Not having to spend top of the line to get 1080 max is no different then the fact you no longer have to pay for a high end card to get 1024x768. As cards improve the bottom moves up with it. Yes we are seeing that shrink right now, but only until prices on 4k monitors start to drop.

Wha? $3,769 may be the average but it is certainly not what the majority of the population makes. If you think most people in the US make that much per month, you live in a very protected social bubble. That is not reality. The majority of people make less than 2K. Heck, I have a PhD and am a professor at a major public university in this country and I don't make $3,769 monthly.

Just mentioning 1024x768 exposes you as a stubborn old greybeard. Geez................

Eh after taxes and various deductions that number will drop to $2800 at the very least. Depending on which part of the country you live in rent/mortgage alone would instantly eat up 50% of what remains. Then factor in utility, cable, phone, and various living expenses and that number starts going down real fast.

Btw monthly income by itself is a useless metric without factoring in cost of living. Someone making $3769 a month and living in downtown San Francisco would probably fare just a hair better than someone living paycheck to paycheck, but someone making $3769 a month in say Jackson MS would be living the high life.

WHAT?! Is that before or after tax? After tax I can understand, but before tax? Unless you live way out in the boonies where cost of living is stupid low, I can't imagine even a fresh young assistant prof only being paid 45K a year.

I find this comment to be quite funny, considering the RX 480 brings overclocked 970/ sometimes 980 performance to gamers. I am sensing a serious case of elitist attitude here.
I am still gaming on my gtx 770 and am looking forward to an RX 480 upgrade for 1080P.

Also not seeing what the point is about disposable income talk. I contribute more than a GTX 1080 worth of dollars just into my 401k every month, but I'm still only buying an RX 480 cause it's more than I need to enjoy 1080P.

Yeah, sorry, that's after taxes. Still, that's what matters when we're talking about spending power and what a purchase means to a consumer, not the money that you make "in theory" that goes to the government. Can't buy a GPU with that money :) That said, although this is not my case, I can assure you there are many new assistant professors that are non-tenure track and are being paid 45K and less than that. The academic market reality is dire right now. We're easily some of the most under-appreciated and underpaid folks - for our qualifications - in the job market right now. Makes me want to go to the private sector, frankly... Then I'd be able to buy GTX1080s and SLI them and not care about how much I'm spending :D

I've heard some of my professors disgruntled talks about this pay issue too. I'm pretty sure it's because all of the money is going to the 10 top members in executive positions at the school, and the football coach. Pretty sure college executive staff make more than President of the US......kinda bs if you ask me. They claim to be "not for profit universities" but with so many 150K + salaries going around I don't buy it

Damn that's just brutal. I knew academia was bad but not THIS bad. Then again my only benchmark were the tenure track assistant profs in the sciences at Toronto who started at around $100K CAD, so what do I know lol. (maybe they didn't start at $100K, but after a few years of assistant professorship they all seemed to be making around that much)

I need it to be in a lower category to make myself feel better about purchasing a GTX 1080 ;)

lol! you are gaming @ 1440P? If so then you have my permission to splurge
You can actually hit quite a few games at 4k on the 1080, but it is not an every game max settings 60fps 4k card. I still think those are at least one more gen away.

$3769 gross monthly sounds fairly accurate to me for the average american household income. I said household which implies many of those family's are dual income. After taxes thats $3,000ish, a $200 video card would be a large purchase to a majority of these familys. Out of all my friends, only one has a geforce 1070 the rest all switched to consoles because they couldnt afford to keep up with pc hardware... so they say.

There are 12 in stock at my local Microcenter for $249.99. Would be a good place to check!

Literally hit up a site to check, see it in stock, click add to cart and its out of stock already. Has been a week and no dice. Do I have to literally spend my whole day checking for them :(?

Plus you have sites like Newegg, which have no single cards in stock but have enough to sell them in bundles.

I have noticed the same problem.
Do not worry, we will be rewarded next week with aftermarket cooled cards for extra 20 bucks (worth it)

Although I'm really hoping they will have aftermarket 4GB cards out too. I am going cheap on this upgrade cause I'm still on 1080P and plan to upgrade to the bigger cards around black friday anway (vega or 1080ish)

I highly doubt we will see a Vega or Ti card this year, especially considering both companies road maps put them into next year.

RX 490 dual gpu before xmas ;)
I don't think its normal to have a delay of 6 months for full product line on new architecture is it?
If AMD doesn't produce something bigger than 480 by xmas i think that is extremely poor planning on their part and don't really expect that

RX 490 dual gpu before xmas ;)
That would be an absolutely stupid move by AMD unless they have some magic solution to fix how badly supported multi GPU setups are. the 4990 would be better off being a Polaris 10 chip with better power management full 64ROPS and maybe a higher clock than a 480.

agree, but unless mini vega is ready before xmas it may be all they can get out first

Yeah, my target has been the 4GB cards too. They're like rare treasures it seems, the Sapphire on Amazon occasionally comes into stock, but I think someone has a bot picking them up or something. At this point I'm really just waiting until next week.

My guess once people got wind they may actually be 8gb cards they went on a buying frenzy

I am really not sure if I should wait till custom RX 480 hits the scene before I pull the trigger and get one. I don't feel like putting a preorder in on a reference card. I still don't know when the customs will be listed on NCIX (I am in Canada) and all.

What is your alternative?

How about low mid range since i would consider a 1070 to be midrange. The jump in performance with this gen on both AMD and nvidia's side has really messed with the clear low, mid, high tier delineations.

If you consider the 1070 to be mid-range, you are not living on this planet. I would normally resort to words that could be seen as name-calling in order to describe such a mental discrepancy, which is against the forum rules, so I'll have to be more elaborate.

Chances are anyone who thinks that the third fastest GPU on earth with a price well over the weekly wages of most Americans is considered 'mid-range' is either overprivileged, under-witted or both..

Seems like die-size, not actual performance or price, is the new metric.

What is your alternative?

I need to drive 3440x1440, so my choices are somewhat limited.

1. 1070 (also sold out)
2. get a 290x cheap somewhere somehow
3. R9 Fury X?
4. GTX 980 Ti

I am currently going without a card. Hehe.

I think it's a tad elitist

im secure enough with myself to avoid making such broad generalizations of other people to make myself feel better. The card is priced around a game console if it can be had for MSRP, so I wouldn't consider it an elitist card.

Well, what would you consider an elitist card? As I said before, if the third fastest GPU on earth seems 'mid range' to you, I would love to see the mental gymnastics used to name a 'high end' product.

Im going to get real with you: Im a guy who had two Titan X cards back when the 980Ti was still a sold-out wonderboard. Im a guy who appreciates nice things. Im not going to judge anyone by what great opportunities they were given or their huge bank accounts: what I WILL judge people on is an absurdly privileged disconnect with reality. Saying the 1070 is a 'mid range' card today is not an unpopular opinion: it is a false statement. It is false, incorrect, negative, wrong, faulty, invalid thinking that exposes a dire gap between the brain that conceived it and the reality that the rest of us humans inhabit.

I'd answer you but my entire self worth isn't built on placing a GPU in the appropriate price bracket. I won't suffer an exestiantial crisis merely pondering the possibility that people could potentially have completely different views on what should or should not be considered midrange. I personally bought a 1080 let the rest eat cake ;)
