I have an actiontec 704WG router (as provided by my ISP) and was running bittorrent (azureus) and attempting to browse the web (in particular, HardOCP). I was getting an absurd amout of timouts/connections errors/general junk. I am wondering if the high amount of active connections btitorrent tends to esablish was causing my router to malfunction. I also recieved high packet loss on ping (as well as latencys of 100-600ms). Thing was, I was only pumping 20K down/20K up through it (my DSL line is rated at 384/384). Is this a legitimate reason for my router to screw up, or might there be something else wrong. I rebooted it and everything seems to be working fine. Any ideas as to what happened?

Ummm yah, Actiontecs are NOT high end quality routers, they are for grandma and grandpa to get their email and surf and thats it. When you start hammering those little things with seroius I/O requests like Azureus, they litterally have a breakdown and can't handle it. Its almost like a DOS attack that were problems years ago, they simply can't handle that much traffic.

In my case, I DMZed my 701g Actiontec to my D-Link 4300 and I can hammer that sucker like crazy and I don't get dead links or disconnects because a higher grade router will be able to handle and prioritize much more traffic *hence why CISCO's are so expensive*
 
Alright, good. Not my fault then. I am going to buy a D-link router with an integraed gigabit switch (the one they advertise as a "gaming router" I'm too lazy to look up the model number) and limited outgoing packet prioitization. But the problem is, I want to be mobile iwth it, so I clearly can't use it as my primary router. Do you have a cheap (but effective) one to reccomend? I really should have pounced a few months back when newegg had a free router after rebates...

Uhhh, how much more mobile do you want it? Palm sized?
 
Why would you want to bring your router to a LAN party? They'll just be using a big switch or two or three....

Yeah, Im failing to see what your meaning behind moving the router. If you think you can unplugg your router and modem from your cable or DSL provider and then just "plug" it in at your friends house, I got news for ya bud, it won't work. Both cable and DSL are provided toa specific house and address for the customer and setup by your ISP. My particular DSL signal is for me, and me alone, no one else can use it and I can't used it outside my apartment.
