Hi guys, currently my son in law wants to record his own music ( rap music) and i was wonderin is it possible to set one up for him for under 500 dollars or cheaper? Obviously the lower the better cuz this is prolly just a minor phase hes going through but i wanna get it for him for christmas.
I currenlty have a fairly decent computer socket 754 3700amd/1 gig ddr ram/ 2 x36 raptors raid/500 backup hardrive/ only onboard sound/.

Since i am clueless about any of this , can anyone help me find the way??

I have tried to pricecheck myself and do some homework but i have no idea what im reading or equipment.

If you want to go with something reasonable yet still low end...

I'd start with something like this:

And for about $350 he's got a competent starting rig. There are a multitude of options that you can go with, however this should provide a good starting point. If he doesn't like it in the long run, then you've got a decent set of headphones, you can sell the mic for close to what you paid (if it's not beat up) and sell the other stuff to one of his friends.

Also, if he needs software Audacity is an open source program that is highly recommended!

If he wants to record rap then yes a 400$ gateway will do to get him started. Thing is that he is going to learn and then decide what equipment best suits him.

Let him start with something basic and free on your computer like this to get the hang of whether he wants to put the time into it.

I used a Tbird 1GHz with 256 ram for a long time. I would spend any money you have on getting him to learn the piano or something. Thats the one thing I missed out on, learning an instrument. I can mix 2 records together but when trying to produce I have a hard time replicating some sounds from my head as I don't have the knowledge of notes, scales etc.
 
Yeah learning the piano is crucial since it lets you get sounds through the synth - something I wish I could do when I make music
