Recommend a Sound System

My sister needed a entertainment system for at college, so I gave her mine. I have $500 for a system (which I know isn't a lot), so recommend me a decent setup. I basically need everything for that price point (speakers, amp, dvd player). I will be getting a high def tv when I get my tax rebate later on. With my old setup, I had the following connected: TV, iPod (via component...some of the new setups have a regular iPod connection I see), VCR, DVD player, CD changer, reel-to-reel (I have a bunch of old reels that I'm putting onto cd to archive for my grandparents), turntable.

Basically the only thing I have left is the reel-to-reel and turntable. This is used to watch tv, movies, and listen to music. I don't have a dedicated media room or anything like that...just the living room setup in my apartment. Any suggestions would be great!
 
I recommend the Logitech Z-5450. You'll have a few hundred bucks left over for a nice progressive scan DVD player. You weren't clear about what all was going into your $500 budget- surely you don't expect a tv in there, too :\

A note of caution, though. I used to live in an apartment, and having a thunderous sound system isn't going to win you any tennant of the year awards.
 
Nope, the tv will be added later. What I would need now is the following:

*Speakers (my old system had four satellites, center and sub...that setup was nice)
*Amplifier (I need one to accomodate at least 4 input sources)
*DVD player (instead of getting a cd player I might just use the dvd player for CDs when I do happen to pop them in...I never really used the cd changer that much).
**If any money is left over, a VCR....not that critical though; I can always get a cheap one for 5 bucks from surplus at work.

Hope that clears things up a bit...thanks for the help again.

That knocks off the first two items on your list. As for the next two, I'd recommend the JVC DR-MV7S. Unmatched, and the HDMI will work great with your HDTV when you get one.
 
Thanks for all the replies...some great recommendations. I had forgotten to look at what JVC offers. I had mainly been looking at entire combos from Sony, Yamaha, Panasonic and Samsung. Before I had the seperate units, and I did like that. However, the idea of saving space with a nice small unit is nice too. I think it's time to go to the store again and look at all my options!
