Recommend a RAID controller

I am going to be running 3 modern 1.0gb SATA HDs in a RAID 5 configuration. This is going to be for a linux box.

Need drive recommendation too.
 
If this is gonna be for Linux box, than the software RAID MDADM should be more than enough for your needs unless you're need really really high performance.

If using MDADM, virtually any drive will do AFAIK. Though I'd recommend Hitachi or Samsung drives.
 
Linux has wicked fast software raid already. I would check it out first. If the speed and features are not good enough for you then I would recommend looking Adaptec 5 series for Sata 1/2 or Adpatec 6 series for Sata 3. LSI makes some nice controllers as well.
 
I would recommend against a raid controller in linux. Just use the builtin mdadm raid and a HBA (if you want more disks than the motherboard ports allow). For that I recommend an Intel sasuc8i. At work I use a few of these in my linux software raid servers. On the 9 disk (2TB hitachi 7k2000) software raid 6 array on a 2.83GHz core2 quad I am getting > 500 MB/s writes and 700 MB/s reads. During reading and writing I see a less than 12% cpu usage on a single core of the core2 quad. During the 8.5 hour rebuild of the entire 14 TB array the usage is much higher and is multithreaded but still it did not bog down the system.

Have you tried the SASUC8I with 3TB drives? I have not seen a report either way for 3TB drives working with that HBA.
 
If you need 3 TB drives, you cannot use SAS1 controller like the SASUCI8l but need one of the new SAS2 ones like a LSI 9211
I would also use the Hitachi disks as they are non 4k

Have you actually tried a 3TB drive with the SASUCI8I, or know someone who has tried one?

The OP said it was for linux, which works great with HDDs that are 4KiB sectors internally. So no need to worry about that.
