Re-installing Win 7?

I've heard somewhere that Win 7 can only be installed on one hardware platform... is this true? I installed the update version of Home Premium over Vista64, and am considering upgrading my mobo, cpu and memory in this box.

Will I be allowed a fresh install? Do I need to contact MS?
 
Always grey areas when installing an OS. If you purchased an OEM copy then it is tied to the current system and since you are doing a huge upgrade and replacing three parts. You will probably have to activate but shouldn't need to contact MS.

In terms of a fresh install, are you staying with Nvidia or ATI for the motherboard or switching drivers all together? I would remove all drivers I could find from the system before swapping out the parts, might cause less problems when installing the new motherboard.

First, make sure you have a back-up of all your data you want saved, if any. Then do the replacements then just drop the Upgrade disc in and install directly from that. Do a custom installation, then delete the partition for the hard drive, then click on it and press next (which means wiping your hard drive). Do not enter the key in during installation. There are a few tips online as to how to get an Upgrade version to activate once you get to the Windows desktop.

The only reason you would have issues and may have to contact MSFT is if you activate your 7 key multiple times within a short period on different hardware configurations. If you've only activated it once then I don't think this would be a problem for you to do.
 
While I hate doing this, I think I want to re-format the c: drive and start fresh. I'm assuming I can install Win 7 from the update DVD with only putting in my FULL Vista DVD for verification of my upgrade status.

As for backing up, I have a 1 terabyte external ESATA I use for stuff like this, but I will have to re-install all my software which is a pain...

Hi, Milehigh,

Check this thread for links to install guides. A forum search using "win 7 upgrade install" will provide you with a number of threads addressing this.

Also, you do not need to insert the Vista media to verify anything with the Win 7 Upgrade.

No, didn't ignore, and actually re-read... You're saying you can re-install from the upgrade disc without entering the CD/DVD key?

If I got to the hassle of starting fresh, it will probably be on a new hard drive :)

Yes because for some people it won't accept the upgrade key in that method. Once your back at the desktop, it will ask you to input the key and activate. You can try that, if it doesn't work, there are other various methods to get it to activate.
