I'm building my new system, and I have decided to put in 4 GB of DDR PC3200 RAM. I want to dedicate 3 GB of that RAM to a RAMdisk. Do you guys think if I put games in there it will seriously affect the speed of the gaming? I have an Athlon64 FX-53 and the x800xt-pe equipped with watercooling on both. I figure that the performance lack in Doom3 with the xt-pe could be compensated by a RAMdisk (getting textures and whatnot off the RAMdisk would be easier than from the HD). What do you guys think?

It probably will not increase your frame rate, but your map and object load time will be greatly improved if you decide to go ahead with the 3 gig ram drive. TechTV did a show about the benefits of a RAM drive for gaming, you might be able to find the article on the screensavers web site.

And since you're asking on comments for your computer, it is a damn fine machine.

Thanks for the advice. I looked up the article, and that gives me a little better idea of the performance results I can expect. I'm downloading the software now, I just hope that it includes a way to re-synch the info to the HD every once in a while and with my backup power supply I shouldn't have a problem. Thanks for commenting on the pc... I'm kinda hoping I didn't jump at the high specs stuff too early before newer cheaper stuff comes out.

:edit: I just changed my sig, btw. I had forgotten that I have the CPU and GPU watercooled.

/ [H]ard as anyone could possibly be...

This is getting insame. The cpu and the ram would go well with my development server. :)

I've always wanted to do something similar, but thinking about it, you wouldnt be able to fit the whole DOOM3 directory on a ram drive. You'll have to split it up, if thats even possible. Being that its a single player game, it wouldnt be as profitable, as if it was lets say UT2k4, or other multiplayer games where it matters being one of the first in the server. Still, if I had access to at least 2gb of memory, Im sure I would be toying around also.

I don't want to think about load times that quick I'm drooling over here :D What speed and how big are the chips and what the heck do you do that you can afford 3gb of ram for the love of god.

Well, the pc is $3700 overall... and that's mainly scholarship money at work there ;).

The RAM is Corsair DDR400 PC3200 in 1 gig sticks. It's labeled with Cas latency of 2.5.

How big is the D3 directory? If it's over 3 gigs then I'm in trouble, lol

Please post some benchmarks when you have everything. I'd be interested in seeing the results. I am thinking about doing something similar the next time I build a new machine.

Sure thing. I was thinking about doing that anyway, but now I know I can post it and at least someone will look at it.

not gonna fit in 3gb probably...

ut2k4 is 5gb

you people are insane! you guys get way too overhyped about this stuff. a Barton 2800 w/ a 9700 pro and 512 of ram would run the game just fine, this is so insane....

I'll just call em [H]ARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3gb ramdisk < this

$700 for the unit, then 8x2gig dimms = a shit load of money

but 16 gigs :D

Then, you could get another one and go raid 0

haul it to lans too:

Integral 160 minute 7.2v battery back up to cover electricity board power outages (1250 milliamp hours - on board trickle charge unit takes 48 hours to fully charge).

Wow! That thing is amazing. It's $700 for the system, but then you have to buy the RAM too. At first with the $700 price tag I was thinking about selling 3 gigs of RAM to buy it, but it's a little more expensive than that. Nice grab!

I highly doubt such a drive would boost your frame rate substantially.

I'm not really worried about the framerate that much anymore since I realized that Doom 3 is locked to top at 60 fps, but the loadtimes will be blazingly fast.

No. If the files are accessed during play, they'll come from system cache.
