RAM or CPU, which first?

What should I OC first? My RAM or CPU? I read some articles that mentioned finding the highest FSB/HTT rating first... but both have it.
Also, if someone lets say found that his ram runs really high at a-b-c-d and I have the exact same brand/model/amount, can I just plug in his results and it'll work just as well?
 
First off, if you're looking to overclock an Athlon 64 system, read this guide and it'll show to how to reach your system's potential.

As for your second question, no, you cannot plug in someone else's results and assume it will work. Every chip is different, and every chip will have different potentials.
 
That's the guide I was reading :D He also had my RAM (Crucial Ballistix 2x512) in his RAM guide... which is why I asked..

Can someone insight me on which I should OC first please?

But the point of the guide isn't about overclocking one part or the other first, it's about finding each component's maximum potential and then setting your final overclock that way.

Ah, I thought one depended on the other to OC (wasn't sure in which order, but now I know it doesn't matter)

Well when you read the guide, you'll notice that you don't actually set any kind of overclock until you know the maximum potential of each of the pieces of hardware (by bringing all of the other components out of the equation).
 
allways find the maximum OC for the CPU fist, then try to tighten in the memory if there is anything left to go for. Trying to do it the other way around would just be illogical since you'd have to do all the work twice...

Given the questions you are asking, im assuming you havent read the overclocking an A64 system, so please do and then re-ask you questions. I think you may find most of them answered in the other thread.

And yes, every single chip (even 2 of the same chip, like 2 amd 3500+ chips) are completely different. They all overclock different and they all tollerate different levels of overclocking at different voltages. Its just a matter of how lucky you got when you got your processor.
 
OK, last question then.. How safe would it be to increase the voltage on stock cooling for CPU/RAM? I can't get another CPU/RAM if my new one dies, but I deffintaly don't want to keep it at stock speeds
 
Try upping the FSB as much as you can stably before you try to touch the Vcore...Vcore is usually a last resort for me personally when i overclock stuff.

However, generally as long as the temps on your processor stay reasonable under load, then you should be fine. Reasonable being between 50-60C under load.

For this you are also in luck, since you have a DFI lanparty board, get the ITE Smartgaurdian software, its what i use to monitor my temps on that same mobo and it works wonderfully. Also check out A64 Tweaker and ClockGen to make your overclocking less painful of a process.

I read an article saying that unless I up the volts, I won't get real OCing going, because it'll be more of a minimal OC.. is that true?
 
it really once again depends on the processor. I have an opteron 148 and i got it to 2.8Ghz and 2.7Ghz stable on stock volts and i started at 2.2Ghz...so i would consider 500-600mhz up pretty significant. Right now though i bumped up .10V and i managed to get to 2.9Ghz...So sometimes it helps and sometimes you hit your peak before you Volt mod, it just really depends on your pocessor.
 
I always start with finding the CPU limit before I try to find the RAM's limit, I can always switch my RAM if it's holding back a kickass 3.2ghz clock on my 3800 X2 :D (PS, it's not, but you know what I mean).

Yes, you'll usually need a bit more voltage (read: Push) in the processor to get a good OC... Now, some chips can overclock 800-900mhz without anything, but that's a very small minority.

As a rule, dont OC anything you can't afford to Overclock :D. But I do this all the time so disregard that. Anything up to about 1.45v is fine with air cooling (unless you really know what you're doing, and I assume you have a BIT of work to do before you get there :) ) 1.6 on water, and about 1.7 on Phase change (not that anyone in their right mind would use phase change for 24/7 cooling :) ).

For getting to about 2.5 I'd say go for 0.05v over stock. At most 0.1v (You can go higher, but if you need more voltage than that make sure your temperatures are in order).

Depends on the chip, but don't be afraid to raise the voltage. Just make sure temps are in check.


If you follow eclipse's guide, you shouldn't be worrying about these things. Find your maxes and hitup that overclock!
