Seeing as I never had a RAID setup before I wanted a challenge and redundancy for a reason. It seems as one of my 2 week old 100gig IDE drives decided to crap on me. My array is now degraded.
My question is, can I just slap any other 100gig HD in there and it will sync before booting to windows? Will I have to delete the array and re-create it, and if so, will this lose my data? I absolutely can not lose the data, I know theres an option to erase the data and it seems unrelated to the actual array setup.
I assume if it isnt the exact same model Ill have to rebuild the array .... so that it takes only the capacity of the smallest drive (even though its minimal). By doing this ... it will not get part of the data if the new drive has a few less tracks/cyl/heads/etc (capacity) Will this data just get erased? Its minimal so I dont guess it would matter.
Also .... must i specify which drive is the "data filled" drive so it knows what to sync to? Somewhat like ghost in that, as well as the large to small HD ghost. Ive never had a problem with ghost as long as the HD didnt have MORE data than the smaller dest drive contained .... some sort of defrag by chance?
