Raid array & regular desktop SATA drives?

I have a few Maxtor 10 300GB SATA150 laying around that I yet to use. I was going to use 4 of them and save money rather than buy the WD 400GB RE series. My question is.. do the desktop drives drop from the raid controller due to pausing or error correction? I've read here and there it does, but then other people use regular SATA drives and do not mention a problem. I've also heard they are slower than RAID specific drives? I'll be using an Areca or 3ware PCIX or PCIe card.

IIRC western digital had the drives that caused issues in raids not maxtor.

A: Desktop drives are designed to protect and recover data, at times pausing for as much as a few minutes to make sure that data is recovered. Inside a RAID system, where the RAID controller handles error recovery, the drive needn't pause for extended periods to recover data. In fact, heroic error recovery attempts can cause a RAID system to drop a drive out of the array. WD RE is engineered to prevent hard drive error recovery fallout by limiting the drive's error recovery time. With error recovery factory set to seven seconds, the drive has time to attempt a recovery, allow the RAID controller to log the error, and still stay online.

Thanks guys. Yea, I saw this on WD's site, but I was looking for real world experience. Wanted to see if anyone used desktop sata150/300 drives with RAID on a soho workstation/sever environment. Needed to know about the reliablity... so thanks again for the info!
