The company that I work for is getting a new software package upgrade, but that software requires a server and 3 other systems to operate. Currently, we are using 3 Dell GX110 sytsems, but with the upgrade I would like to move away from using desktop cases in our server room. What I want to do is put together 3 desktop systems but use rackmount server cases for this. Ideally I would just use Dell servers (our hardware vendor) but the company won't justify more than $1000 per system. The specs from the software vendor are not that demanding, and any 2+ Ghz processor should handle it fine.

These systems don't need RAID or even a lot of storage space. What I was thinking was a basic "everything included" motherboard (NIC, Video), an 80 GB Hard drive (possibly two and use the motherboard's onboard RAID since most come with that now), and 1 GB RAM in each system.

Can anyone recommend some cases? A good stable motherboard? Also, are there any concerns I should be thinking about? My main concern would be the CPU cooler. I don't really care whether I go with AMD or Intel for the processor.

Another option would be if anyone could recommend some low-budget rackmount servers.
 
You can get systems that meet or exeed those specs from dell in the form of 1U boxes in your price range. I think the poweredge sc1425 is going for like 950 at the moment with a 2.8ghz xeon, 80gb drive and a gig of ram. The Poweredge 850 will get you a 2.8ghz celron with 512mb ram and an 80gb drive for about 725.
 
If you say things like we use Dell and we don't need raid all in the one post it makes me very worried about what kind of company you work in. Things in the hardware world are cheap for a reason. I'd suggest hunting around for a used rack and then find some lower end rackmount servers. You might want to hit up HP or IBM for the server parts of your hardware. They might cost more, but they do so for a reason.
 
Well, I think we found a barebones case and motherboard that will do the job. I have ordered the equipment and we will see how things go.

As to the comment about the Dell pricing. I just checked our Dell Premier site and taking off all optional additions and going with just a base server, it still comes out over $1000, which is a capital expense for the company and won't be approved at this time due to financial constraints. I don't see how to get the systems configured for below $1000 without going through Ebay or some other used equipment source which isn't an option.

To the person questioning my choices. This is a system designed to run software that the vendor requires a standard desktop for. Unfortunately, that same vendor can't seem to pull their heads out of their rear ends and realize that today's systems should be able to handle everything on one box. If that was the case, then I would go with Dell and get an actual server (actually, we already got one), but no, they need a server plus 3 additional systems to run seperate components for the software :mad: Now, tell me why I should spend $2000-$3000 per server for these three systems when the vendor only requires a desktop systems?? Why does that make one worry about the company? What I am trying to do is keep the server room clean (or actually clean things up) instead of being a hodgepodge of equipment, some being servers and others desktops, spread around the room.
