quick question about electricity problems during lanparties

normal household current is 50amps, from what i heard...(correct me if i'm wrong) but my households voltage has been changed to 100amps..

now lets say i want to host a lan party with several friends
and lets also say that nothing except the computers are on
and lets say that the average sum of all the powersupplies current on each amp adds up to 40amps each
does that mean i can support 2-3 computers? (2 x 40 amps = 80amps < 100amps)
how many computers can i support?.. and how can i count it up?

i ve seen and heard about people who hosted lan parties with 10 computers or so and up, does the outlets really support all that much?

please help, i may have a private lan party with a few of my friends for a first experience

Standard residential circuits are rated for 15 amps. A typical computer with crt monitor probably draws about 2-3 amps, so you could probably run 5-6 computers on a circuit. Any more than that would probably be pushing it though. You don't want the circuit breaker tripping when you're in the middle of a game. Although if you are planning on having more than 5 or 6 guys with computers in a room then maybe power isn't your main problem. :D

My friend hosted a lan awhile back with ~15 people and we were tripping breakers constantly. I ended up bringing over an industrical grade extension cord from an outlet on another circuit, and we split the power between the people. Problem solved.

assume 15 amps per circuit. If in doubt though, walk outside and check your fuse box
 
You will want to be careful of witch plugs are used. Sometimes just because a plug is in a different room doesn't mean it on a different breaker/fuse, and be sure to use extention cords of a high enough amp rating.

That's usually 100 amps of 220V. That's the line that comes in from the street.
Individual circuits are usually 15 amps @ 110V, though I did have a 20A circuit in an apartment once.

Just out of curiosity, anyone here ever gotten desperate enough for power to unplug an oven or dryer and switch your PSU to 220V?
 
Word of advice...never plug one power strip into the outlet and then daisy chain ten more powerstrips powering ten comps off of it :p

haha. Can't say that I've done that. It would truely be [H]ardcore if you had a cord with a 220V dryer plug on the end.
 
Yeah just be aware of where the circuits are. I was at a 20 person in house LAN (crazy crowded let me tell ya), and in the middle of a Q3 CTF game half the house goes dark. I was on the side that still had power :D . I have never laughed so hard. Let me describe it.

Anyway back on topic. Just be sure to check. I had a 20 person @ my house just fine. We had about 3 people per outlet.
 
I would take my 1200VA UPS with me and while everyone else is sitting in the dark i would be racking up frags for a good half hour :).
 
I have done 12 computers on 2 circuits with no problems, My computer room had a dedicated 15a breaker for my desk, everyone else shared a 10a, I think there was like 8 on my circuit, it is the crt's that pop em. Average house hass 100a service, I am not sure how much it would cost to upgrade to 200a.

One of the guys almost had one. Sort of. A few years ago the co. I was working for bought this big UPS for our servers. They forgot to check what kind of power it needed. It required 220V input. The problem? No 220V in our office. One of the guys almost talked them into letting him take it home. He lived in a house, so he was just going to get an extra 220V circuit put in for it.

Showing up at a lan w/ my "iMac", asking for 220V, and showing them a dryer plug would be kinda funny. I'd have to get around to running the LCD display off the PSU instead of it's brick though.

As far as power for a lan goes it's really more of an issue of how many plugs you can get at than the rating of the service coming into the house. 100A @ 220V is 22000W... if you figure 200W a machine that's 110 rigs. The catch is it's still 7/circuit, and getting at like 15 circuits is a bit of a pain. A lot of houses don't even have that many 110 circuits, and some of them are dedicated to things like lighting or the blower in the furnace. Of course if everyone had a rig like mine you'd be talking a significantly smaller number of machines... 10 HDs, dual MPs and 3 CRTs... sure this thing'll run on 200W. :)
However the power works out my limit is probably about 7-8, and that's w/ 2 people on the couch.
 
Do you honestly think a regular computer power supply draws 40 amps at 120V (that's 4800 watts!)? A Pentium 4 alone draws about 60-70 amps, but that's at 1.5V.

What!? Thats insane, I never knew that..... unless your BSing, and in that case I just made a fool out of myself.
 
i host lan's at my place all the time and I held 25 computers on 3 seperate 20 amp circuits off of a main 100amp line. Just dont be stupid and put more then 7-8 pcs on one circuit. especially if they have speakers and 19" or greater monitors.

Yes, Pentium 4s draw a LOT of current and that's why you need a good PSU to run it (65 amps @ 1.5V is about 100W).

oh, my bad... i m didnt really understand something before

i read that on the power supply label saying like 17 or 18amps on the 12v rail and other currents on the other rails... so i just added up the current of all the rails thinking it was the same thing
stupid me...

btw, i read this article a while ago that has all these dropdown menus and u pick what kinda parts are in your system and click this button that shows ur electricity draws... anyone seen this lately?, post a link please...

15amps for residential??... i hav a hoover vacuum cleaner that runs at like 12 amps... and now all i just gotta plug in a fan or two and pop goes the circuit
btw, with 15amps. how many air conditioners can run off that?

one more thing, can anyone show me a site to show how to do the networking for a lanparty?...THANKS

also, if theres any other info or tips/advice, POST PLEASE:D :D :D
 
Man some of this is pitiful.:p
We have 200A on each side of the 220V into the main box.
And we've got 15, 20, 25 and 30 amp 110V breakers inside.
