questions from an E8400 user

whats up folks.
while traveling in the FS sub-forum, i got myself a brilliant idea.

current setup:
e8400
4gigs ddr2 hyperx memory
asus rampage formula mobo
evga gforce 9600gt

would it be a wise idea to upgrade to a q9550 ?

i dont play much games..only games i play are Counter Strike and Counter Strike Source.
i'm anticipating Counter Strike GO like a junkie.

my current setup kind of handles everything i do just fine however, i got the upgrade bug, but i don't see the urge to build a complete system.

if i get the q9550, would it be a good candidate for a 6950 videocard? or will one bottleneck the other?

anyways folks, please help me think..any ideas are welcome.

for 70 after you sell your cpu its a fair upgrade. i wouldn't do it until i know how cs go does as far as cpu usage. source games are cpu hogs so if it were me i would buy a 2500k and use that (actually i wold buy a 2600k but that's just me)
 
The only benefit from going quad on that rig is multi-tasking & multi-threaded performance...If your game doesn't use more than 2 threads, you might not see any real-world benefit for the money...If anything, try buying a DDR3 board for your E8400 & some DDR3 1800 to max it out...

its an affordable upgrade and he will be happy to be digging through his hardware to upgrade it..you will see a difference especially him as he knows his computer...
id do it if i were in his position...formadable upgrade
 
my cpu is two bins slower than a Q9550 I have no bottleneck problems with my 560ti and good to great performance in AA3, sc2, blackops, etc. clock that chip around 3.6 and you are good to go.
 
I was running a 6970 with a Q6600 @ 3.4ghz with absolutely no issues. Fantastic setup, IMHO.

Well according to official statements, its a graphical update to the actual source engine, so its not like they have made a complete new engine.

this is why i thought about a Q9550.
on the other hand, last night after making this thread, i hopped on newegg and was like hmmmmm, i have more than enough time to save up for this...


it always comes to a dilemma when the bug kicks in :S
 
I actually wouldn't upgrade to a q9550.
Your peak framerates may not increase very much, with the games that you play, and you probably won't see much of a change in your minimum framerates with those games.

Cost effective. would be a q6600.. should cost you nothing, or close to nothing.

Another possible upgrade in the 100 dollar net are.. is if you notice your memory could probably sell for as much as it costs to get 8gb ddr3 (that will make a difference), your motherboard can sell for 20 dollars less than an x58 or if your lucky p67 motherboard, or as much as a p55 motherboard.

So for 70 dollars more... you can get a i7-920/930 (150),a i7-860 (150), or an i5-2300/i5-2400 (140-150) (depending on whatever is on the market)... and you can spend a bit more (30 dollars) and get a 2500k (180).

All of which are quite a bit more powerful than a q9550.

Will it make a difference in the games that you play? No probably not.. will it in the future.. yes.

And then.. of course you should have some money set aside for solid state love.. that will make a huge difference in day to day tasks, when you do other things with your computer. If you don't have crap like the creative suite installed on your computer.. 64 g/b's are plenty , or 80gb if you go intel.

I'd hold off on buying a video card for the next few months, until southern islands hits.. then one of two things happen.. that 6950 costs quite a bit less.. or you pick up a 7 series...


Now why have i spent so much time thinking it.. my mothers birthday is coming up... and I built her a e8400 two years ago... so I wanted to get another 4 gbs of ddr2 1066 cas 4 memory.. and well.. she's getting sandy bridge.
 
Might be a worthless upgrade but if you want to hold off on upgrading to sandybridge then I would say do it.
 
i wouldnt call any upgrade worthless, especially coming from an hardforum member..
 
If your usage isn't going to take advantage of your upgrade, it's worthless. On any forum.
 
i believe you should seek a different forum to become a member on.

people on this forum upgrade just for the fun of it.
 
I believe you should ease up on the ignorance factor and you'll soon realize, this thread exists for a reason. If the OP did not care at all about upgrade value, this thread would not exist. He's asking opinions and I gave mine.
 
I think it would be worth it if you could get a good deal on one. Never a bad idea to get moar processing power. Have to agree that your current games aren't going to take advantage of it but it could help your rig last a little longer and if you do photo it video work it could come in handy.
