Question on Apple Intelligence

I saw numerous videos on YT about apple intelligence being a failure, lagging miles behind google, I don't have an android device so the only good feature I know about Google AI is that eraser just gives an AI image doesn't actually erase.

I had a chat with a friend who is an iOS developer. His view about google AI is raise investor's money. Apple will perfect it before jumping on to the band wagon. Which shows that apple doesn't care about investors money, so it was a bold move by apple. AI is like double edge sword sure it will give you answers but at the cost of all your privacy, Apple doesnt like that at all as it violated their guidelines.

Whats your opinion on Apple Intelligence?

That is one claim, that "Apple wants to do it right" but they also were behind since they did not even try to create their own from the start, which yes, had benefits as we have seen how much of a failure even CoPilot has been and much of the promised hype fell on its face....

Time will tell really.

Google is inserting much or even most of its machine learning products on users that don't need or want them.

Definitely a "numbers to brag about in a stockholder meeting move".

trust Apple AI......

My phone doesn't feel any different pre-AI than it does now. Photo image sharpening after a picture is taken is decent but Siri is still just as mechanical sounding as always. I got the 16 pro which was their AI flagship phone. The image playground lets you make goofy cartoon charactures of yourself and that's about it, it isn't a real AI image creator. The notification summaries are kinda funny but also not really a useful feature. I think my wife text me a long while ago something sarcastic and iphone AI summed it up something like "your wife messaged with sincere apologies...".

Apple didn't backdoor WhatsApp. The companies have implemented fixes... and no, this was not a "because they got caught" situation. Solutions like this take time, and we know Apple has a history of maintaining encryption even if it means being at odds with governments (see the recent tussle with the UK over its now-abandoned backdoor mandate).

It's true that privacy needs to be thoughoughly considered for AI (and most computing, really). Apple is more attentive to that than Google or Microsoft. That doesn't mean it's doing the best job or that its rivals are outright villains. I'd just choose an iPhone because Apple's overall stance is more considerate.

Do they inform the users they are doing this though?

The practice raises questions about end-to-end encryption claims made by messaging platforms, since message content leaves the device through Apple’s systems before reaching intended recipients.

Sure, when you use Siri or other AI tools to do things for you, we know it clearly has to be involved in some way, but did Apple also not make claims that AI things happening all happen locally on your device?

Apple is generally good about telegraphing its privacy approach to users. When it introduced Apple Intelligence, for instance, it outlined that most AI processing happens locally and that a Private Cloud Compute system keeps data anonymous when you do have to go online. There was a dust-up when word got out that Apple was using anonymized Siri recordings to improve its service, but that's now strictly an opt-in behavior.

The UK situation was awkward as the country's government was originally conducting this process in confidentiality; a leak forced the discussion into the open and showed Apple's resistance. The company has had a very public cat-and-mouse game with Cellebrite — Apple would patch an exploit Cellebrite was using to brute-force hack iPhones for criminal investigations, Cellebrite would develop a workaround, and the game would start all over again. And let's not forget that Apple sued NSO Group precisely because it was using exploits to install Pegasus and help governments spy on users.

I think apple intelligence is behind the curve. However, I think apple's strategy is to brand their AI with privacy while pushing AI processing to the phone. AI data centers are a money pit, and they are going to put some companies in the grave. Heck facebook just started over a $$70 million data center at the half way point because it was already obsolete. Apple would be coming very late to that race, the odds they would be the one to see positive cash flow from their data centers is basically nil. So they are trying to get a head start on the next inevitable race, which is how much LLM query processing can be pushed to the customer to keep datacenter spend under control. I suspect they won't stay out of that business forever, but will be moving in to ones vacated by some of the losers in the race to build AI DCs.

Apple Intelligence is very prominently displayed on my system settings greyed out (cause I still be using Intel Mac). My phone is a Mini 12. No "Apple Intelligence" for me. Boohoo

You're not missing a whole lot right now. Current Mac and iPhone models would be worthwhile upgrades from what you're using, but not for Apple Intelligence as it exists today. I'd like to see how the Gemini-infused Siri and other, deeper upgrades work.

I like Apple Intelligence the most among the currently force-distributed AI integrations. You can turn it off.

Pretty happy with my intel running sequoia. But yeah, my work machine (M3Pro) runs circles around it.

Apple is so far behind with the AI “race.” I can not reconcile the AI failure with their stock price. Which has made me lots of money.

I think it’s an indication that actual consumer demand for AI does not match perceptions of consumer demand.

To build on what maddude said:

Apple is a hardware company, and one whose core businesses are relatively stable at that. That can be intensely valuable for long-term investors.

Brands like Google, Meta, and OpenAI may be ahead on AI, but they're also betting a large chunk of their futures on AI. Ditto NVIDIA, even if it's not actually building the AI models itself. That works only so long as their progress leads to something substantial. If it turns out that we're in either an AI bubble or stall out for a prolonged period, their businesses could be in trouble.

I mostly agree with you.

Apple is a software company. You can not buy Apple hardware without the software.

I've heared it phrased that Apple is a hardware company that uses software to sell the products. A classic example was the iPod. You weren't buying iTunes, and even the iTunes Store wasn't built as a near-term profit engine; that software and storefront existed to move iPods.

Having said this, Apple is profiting more and more from services. They still exist as hardware draws, but Apple now doesn't mind too much if you start watching Apple TV on your Android phone and consider an iPhone later.
