Q6600 temps...

Wow ain't this a SHOCKER! Another thread with someone asking "is this temp correct?" with regards to their new Q6600

So anyways...like a lot of people I wanted to double check to see if the temps of my Q6600 are about where they should be or if they are too hot.

The specs of my new system are:

- Q6600 (B3 stepping) @ stock speeds
- Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
- 4GB (1GB x 4) OCZ DDR2 1066 EPP RAM
- Lian Li PC-A05B
- (2) SilenX IXP-74-14 120mm fans
- Thermaltake ToughPower 850W PSU

So in the BIOS (and in nTune) I'm showing a temp of ~ 60C/140F w/ PerfectDisk running, Miranda IM, Firefox and nTune...and this is with the CPU HSF fan running at 100% (as well as the case fans.)

I think I might have put one (or both) of the fans facing the wrong direction but I haven't checked yet. I should also note that I also have my case inside cabinet with the back uncovered...with a good 4+ inches between the back of the tower and the wall.

So any ideas? Am I being paranoid? Are these temps just about right?

They seem a bit high. How are you getting any airflow with your machine in a drawer?

Placing any case in a confined case is a big no no..Unless you accommodate for it..Such as cutting holes in the back panel of the desk for exhausting and what not. I keep my fulltower below my desk..But it has ample room ample room between the wall and it's rear...About 2 feet clearance to exhaust the air...my cpu during the winter idles at 36-38...during the summer 43-45...And considering I have a prescott that's pretty damn good. Try making room for it on your desk or next to your desk. Overall a place where it can get some fresh air. Keep in mind though if you do it right now to give it a cool off period to let the components settle...or you can just leave it on and take a temperature reading tomorrow if you need your pc.

I actually had my previous system in the same location and never had a problem (a Athlon X2 3800+) but then again it wasn't a quad core. Since I noticed the high temps I've been running the computer with the panel open (it's not a drawer btw.)

I'll probably keep in on over night and see how it reads in the morning...then maybe tomorrow I'll flip the fans around and see how that goes.

Your temp seem high to me. For comparison mine are 45,46,45,44c. This is with a minor load - compiling w/ VS.Net 2005 and StarTeam + Outlook + SpeedFan (calibrated +15c for q6600) in the background. P35-DQ6 + 4gig (4x1 Ballistic Tracers 8500), HSF TRUE + SFLEX fan.

Double check fans and mounting on your HSF.

My Q6600 with the Zalman 9700 is rather cool at 3Ghz. 27 CPU - Cores around 30- 45 .. playing games the cores go up to around 55 but CPU stay under 40.

Ok I think I might have fixed the problem. Based on the airflow diagram from Lian Li for my case, I had the back fan facing in the wrong direction.

I also took off my HSF, removed the stock thermal goop and put some better stuff on it...plus I flipped it around so the airflow from the CPU fan would go with the direction of the airflow for the rest of the case.

With 3dsmax 9 open, FEAR running it's built-in system benchmark, Firefox open and nTune running...my CPU temps never went above 50C (120F). Looks like my problem is fixed now...thanks for the verification guys!

I'm having my own issues now with that HSF. I can't get the PC to boot with stability under 1.375v in bios, and its running at ~50C idle.

So I definetly fixed the problem...I had the machine running all night with the nTune "tune system" utility running and so far it's never come close to the 140F temps I was getting before.

@ Dethred: Are you using the stock thermal paste that came on the HSF? I ended up removing it and putting on some better stuff and it seems to work great now. Make sure that the direction the fan is blowing the air off the heatsink is also the same direction the airflow is as well.
