Hey guys, I have a build that's about 2 years old. Powering it is (was) a corsair 620HX. The modular red one that everyone was crooning about back then. It powers a Q6600 and an 8800 ultra, and of course the requisite couple hard drives and an optical drive.
Anyhow, my wife has been using my computer for her schoolwork lately so I haven't had any time on it. She told me it started shutting off on her so I had a look inside. I played around on the computer until sure enough it shut off. After pulling the side off the antec case I noticed the PSU was very hot. So, I left the case door off, turned the 120 case fan that is directly in front of the PSU from low to high, and let her rip.
Everything seemed fine until the next day when the computer was off and would not power back up. I hit the power button and get a very momentary attempt at case fan spool up, but not even enough to make a revolution. The power light just blinks once and that's the end of it.
Well, I pulled my old Antec Trupower 550 from the last computer I built that died a couple years back. Plugged the 20 pin and the atx 4-pin along with one (only have one) PCI-E connector to the vid card. Press the power button and I have post and video display. I assume the PSU is bad. I know the unit is still waranteed but I cannot afford to be down for as long as it will take to send the unit to corsair and go through whatever rigamarol they require.
So I hit fry's and buy a 950w coolmax earthwatts. Sure, it's a lesser unit but it's modular and will get me by until I can get a new Corsair through their warranty process. Well, I get home and hook it all up and it does just the same thing that the Corsair did. So, I plug the Antec back in and voila post. Problem is I can't run the antec because it doesn't have all the SATA connectors, PCI-E connectors I need, nor do I think it is up to the task of powering this machine.
So I'm a bit confused. When I paperclip the Corsair, nothing happens even with 2 case fans hooked up. Same goes for the Coolmax. The antex will spool up with a paperclip. Are these PSUs actually dead? was the new one DOA? the old antec doesn't have the full 24 pins on the power connector. Could that be why I'm able to post with it? could those extra 4 pins be causing a problem with the other PSUs?
Is this something anyone here has experienced? I'm gonna go exchange that coolmax PSU today and see if I can get something that will work for now, but I'm frustrated. Is there something in my system preventing the new PSU from working that will still allow the older antec to spool up?
argh... I hate troubleshooting, but I've been building systems for so many years I guess I gotta do it!
