Ok could someone please summarize for me. Everyone is talking about the RAM and CPU, but what about the GPU? It is a Radeon, clearly, but that is like saying it has an engine? In terms of specs what is the PC equivalent? Is this thing going to perform like a GTX680 or better?
 
I do believe it's a slightly downgraded 7970M chip... I'll update with a source link once I find one.

Edit: Yar, only finding 'rumoured' specs, Sony's keeping things vague.

So we basically know nothing about the console. A 7850? That card is SLOW. What a nightmare. Another generation of jaggies. They're going to up FPS without a big increase in fidelity, most likely. Load it up with nongaming CPU intensive features. It will an improvement but they could do better than a 7850.

let's say it is a 7970m. That chip can't even do BF3 at 60fps in 1080P, let alone Crysis 3.

With a target resolution of 1080P on a dedicated closed system how is that coupled to a 8 core CPU and 8 GB of GDDR5 BAD I think it's a good jump from current consoles.

You can't compare performance to PC you really can't its a closed system. And we don't have PCs with an entire system of GDDR5 it just isn't the same sorry.
No desktop system has direct CPU access to 8 GB of GDDR5 the bottle necks and basic overhead of a multipurpose PC just isn't there.

PS4 will probably still be 30FPS but at 1080p. If they target 30FPS at 1080p then they should be able to put enough anti-aliasing on the games to hide the jaggies.

1080p @ 60FPS probably won't happen on consoles for another generation.

At the distance I sit from my 1080P television I don't think it would matter if they did any anti-aliasing. I imagine it will be the same for most people who use their systems in typical living room setups.
 
Doubt they will use traditional antialiasing techniques. Probably use something on the lines of MLAA/SMAA

Lemme see here a CPU and GPU sharing memory is always slower than a similar CPU and GPU with it't own dedicated memory pool as you have to schedule resources and accesses so that you don't have multiple devices writing to the same memory location at the same time...

Think I am kidding go see what happens when you OC an AMD E series APU memory controller and use faster ram.......

Also are the game engines not able to divide up the memory for the beginning? Like say dedicate 2 GB of the GDDR5 to the GPU and leave the other 6 to the CPU? I’m no software or hardware engineer but that seems like a way to avoid overhead associated with dividing up the memory on-the-fly.
Either way, im interested in seeing what this thing can do. They have a real CPU in it now, which should be a much larger jump in ability compared to how much the GPU is being improved. I believe it was Carmack that said he'd rather have a single core 2 GHz Intel or AMD chip from 2002-2003 compared to the very low IPC 3+ GHz IBM chips used. That is what I blame for AI in console games not advancing past what PC games had like 8-10 years ago. Well with all the ports we get on the PC I guess AI in games has stagnated across the board due to crappy CPU's the games are made for.

They can devide the memory but the fact remains you have to ensure that the game engine is not trying to write to the memory pool that the GPU is working with.

For sure the PS4 is going to be a nice step up, but a PC killer it will NEVER be.

If you guys think PS4 GPU is unimpressive, the new Xbox GPU will really disappoint you.
 
I think an HD7770 only has 10 compute units vs 12 rumored to be in Durango, but the Durango GPU is 200Mhz slower according to the leaked specs. So it should be about the same.


So it appears that PS4 with 18 cu will have a 50% advantage in shaders. I've also read PS4 GPU has 32 ROPs vs 16 in Durango, but that info is less solid than the cu counts.

Also the PS4 GPU CUs are supposed to come with some additional functions to assist in GPGPU tasks above what is in a standard HD7000 series GPU.

But even the Durango GPU will perform better than its equivalent in a PC card due to console efficiency. Carmack tweeted you get about 2x the performance in a console environment than what the same hw could do in a PC. So that would mean Durango should yield results like what you would see out of a 2.4TF PC GPU, and PS4 GPU would be like a 3.6TF GPU in a gaming PC.

No match for a Titan but aside from being capped at 1080p, multiplatform PS4 games should look close to PC. The 8GB GDDR5 will allow PS4 to maintain the same texture resolution. It won't be like this gen where almost every console game's textures are downgraded. This will be the first time a console isn't severely memory constrained compared to a gaming PC.

I don't know how you came to believe a low overhead OS, without hw abstracting APIs and drivers, with code programmed to the metal, targetting a single configuration, won't yield an appreciable difference in efficiency. That should be evident.
 
I don't know how you can believe a console is more efficient as when you do an apples to apples comparison between the console and the midrange PCs released at the time and not see the PC having superior performance....

When the Xbox 360 was released a AMD x1800XL was rendering titles at 1600*1200 with PENTIUM 4.... so you gotta put down the crack pipe man...

Since it was never ported to X360 , that benchmark you linked doesn't prove your argument. I think people will take Carmack's expert opinion at face value, over your dismissive laymen opinion. The fact is Carmack is not the only professional to mention the inherent efficiency advantages of consoles.

Stereophile is also forgetting that Carmack doesn't think the next generation of consoles can deliver much better than current-gen graphics at 1080p, since so much of the extra power will be consumed through that alone. He does say that in the context of flogging his VR dream for the future, though.

Before you start screaming about it not being the actual Far Cry game, Instincts: Predator is an Ubisoft-produced Far Cry mod, using the exact same engine and assets.

You guys are crazy. PS4 is gonna have some kick ass games. First gen games will look like our PC console ports; basically today's console experience with better textures and some DX11 goodies bolted on. Give it a couple years and a game like Uncharted will come around and knock you on your nuts.

It needs to exist on the market for it to actually be overrated, and well, thanks to smaa there should be no excuse for jagfests even if the game is upconverted (just apply it one last time after the upconversion).
 
I think it's funny that PC's have all this potential and yet the best performance is on a console port(Cough* Cough* Crysis 3) and not a PC exclusive. Specs are good but games are better. :eek:

Uh the impact of DX in the current windows evnironment is neglegable at best... a 7870 in a PS4 is not going to outperform a similar setup in a PC especially if the platform uses UMA...
