would the PS3 require one to have an HDTV to properly experience the games' graphics or would aq normal tv show the graphics as they should be, and what price will the PS3 be initially?

You'll be able to play it fine, on a regular TV, but it's just not going to look as good as it would on an HDTV. As far as the price is concerned, at least in the U.S., it's going to be 500 bucks for the cheaper package, and 600 bucks for their premium package.

I don't think that anyone thats worth a salt here would reccamend buying a PS3 without owning a H.D display of some sort. (monitors work)

If you have any money left over, I'd recommend you buy yourself an education.

The answer is yes, you need an HDTV to get the full graphical experience from a PS3 (or 360, or Wii[1]). That said, it's not like it's going to hurt you to play it on an SDTV until you can upgrade - after all, the gameplay is the same, the resolution will just suck. Sort of like playing Counterstrike at 320x240 vs 1600x1200, or similar.

[1] Technically, the Wii would only need an EDTV, but only idiots buy those at this point.

Actually, we don't yet know if that's true. Sony has never demonstrated the PS3 on an SDTV, nor have they every talked about the SDTV experience with a PS3. The PS3 is a vehicle for Sony to sell more HDTVs. They don't have much interest or incentive to make it look good or work well with SDTVs.

I suppose we'll know for sure come November 17th.

Sony might not have much incentive - the game devs, on the other hand, probably remember the lesson of Dead Rising.

Though they havent offically said anything about it theres no way they would develop a system that wont play on sdtv, that would cut out way too much of their market. Even though the ps3 is going to be popular; how many eople do you know that would fork out the 2k for a decient hdtv and another 600 for the system just to play some crappy launch titles.

Sayeth the guy who's from WA and works at a "major software company". That's just nonsense, suggesting Sony would make a console that wouldnt work with 80% of the TVs in the US.

This link shows the demo PS3 that IGN received contained a composite cable in the package.

thanks for the info, but i wonder if it would work on my monitor a dell 1907fp with a max resolution of 1280 1024, do u all think it would look any good on my monitor, i have a 7900gt wit ha tv out, i dont kno if that would b any help ,other than that how will i be able to hook it up to the monitor? which i think would show off the ps3 visuals a lot better than my exsisting sony wega tv :(

I'm not sure the exact specs of that monitor but you would want to connect it using DVI/Component (not sure what connections it has)

If it has DVI a HDMI->DVI cable would be your best option.

If your monitor supports resolution letterboxing (not all monitors support this), it will look fine because when it receives the 1280x720 image, it will automatically letterbox it so that it doesn't look all squishified on your square monitor.

I don't hide who I am or who I work for, but I also don't make a big deal about it here because I like to be able to comment as Private Citizen rather than as Corporate Representative.

That said, I wasn't suggesting the PS3 wouldn't work on an SDTV, I'm simply pointing out that the person whom I quoted can't say with any certainty that it will work fine on an SDTV, because Sony has never demonstrated it, nor talked about. If you want to argue that fact, go ahead and provide a counter-point with some evidence, but you can't dismiss a factual statement simply because of who I work for.

One of the points I've consistently made about every PS3 demo I've seen is that even on these beautiful, large 1080p HDTVs that they demo them on, the font and icons of their dashboard look very small and difficult to read at more than a few feet away. Console gaming is a 10 foot experience, so I've always wondered just what that is going to look like with a PS3 connected to an SDTV, given that their HDTV appearance already makes me think plenty of people will be squinting their eyes to see what's on the screen when using their dashboard.

So I have no doubt that the PS3 will work with an SDTV, but I am curious if using their dashbaord (or XMB) it will be reminiscent of the Dead Rising SDTV experience on Xbox 360.

Agreed, I played dead rising on a sdtv and it was unplayable. You couldnt even read the words on the screen. Will the PS3 work on a sdtv, yes. Will it look good and will all games be playable, no.

There hasn't really been a lesson taught...Dead Rising has sold over a million copies thus far.

You'd have to be slightly crazy to spend that much on a console and NOT have a tv capable of playing the games or films at hi-def.

Heck in Europe you can almost get a 26" HDTV for the price of the PS3 :)

I beat Dead Rising on my SDTV... not saying it won't be better on HDTV, though.

??? WTF are you on? Thanks for contributing to this thread .... Fing troll.

I personally wouldn't buy a HD console without owning an HD display first.

Just so everyone knows, the PS3 is compatible with ALL TV types. SD, ED, and HD.

IGN did recieve theres with only composite cables, furthering the reports that Sony will only ship the PS3 with composite cables; component will be bought separately.

I still think it's pointless to spend $600 on something and not utilize it to it's highest potential. Why even bother? Arguements about people not having money doesn't make sense to me, because the last thing a poor person should be buying is a $600 console in the first place. It's like building a quad SLI rig, and then using a 13 inch monitor with it, sure it *will* work, but why the fuck would you do that? To me, next gen gaming includes HDTV and surround sound, but HDTV at the very least. Do something properly, or don't do it at all.

That's where you differ from the person who simply wants a gaming system for the games, and nothing else.

There are many die-hard fans who will scrounge up every last penny for a PS3 for MGS4 alone. And they'll be just fine playing it on their 19-27 inch SDTV.

They should keep scrounging for an HDTV or a monitor. A dell 2007 can play in high def and with $600 (What they would spend on a PS3), they can buy one and a logitech z-5500 surround sound set-up. Nevertheless, gaming is not for poor people.
