PS3 Headtracking Using Camera Only

Sony is showing off headtracking using only the PlayStation Eye, no glasses needed, no Wii-mote. Pretty damn spiffy stuff if you ask me.

Unlike recent head-tracking video sensations, this clip shows a set-up that doesn’t require strapping any Wii hardware to your head. Nor does it require fancy glasses, like this one made by a programmer from Sony. No. This version requires just the official PS3 camera. And a person with a face and some mobility in their neck.

Wondering how long this would take. Digital cameras have been able to accurately identify faces for years.

Dimensions of the head could be used. Simple press a button at the start to set your point of reference.

Thats possible though it seemed to have a hard time finding the top of his head and was just jittery in general (deciding between the flesh tone and what hair he had left for the top of the big box)

Still a step up but could be allot better.

The wiimote execution was good but the implementation was just horrible, that was simply never going to take off as a commercial product in any way shape or form or any slightest sense of the imagination. I said immediately when I saw it that "he should use a webcam instead" since requiring an extra wiimote and wearing goggles was just.... well words cant describe how bad of an idea that was if there was any intent to actually sell it.

This works just as well and you cant get anymore practical than a webcam with no stupid gear on your face. This just may end up a reality if Sony pushes it hard enough.

Not going to happen but if M$ can license this tech, it is another thing that can be tweaked and worked out on Flight Sim X, and beyond.
Thinking about it a bit if SONY used this for "research" on the PC with FSX, and then ramping up the speed through what's left of the aircraft sims, it might help them get to a "full" product faster since they would have plenty of feedback, as well as early adopters that UNDERSTAND it needs a bit of work right now, if you go straight to a console it HAS to work close to perfectly or it will bomb

When people say head tracking they are referring to rotation, not translation. Finding a face in an image is nothing new, and the over the shoulder view near the end really demonstrates the horrific latency as well.

Too bad thats a hack, and this isnt. The vast majority of people cant setup their Wii to do that.
