Setup is WHS in office, PS3 in video room connected via CAT6. Lots of Handbrake encoded videos on WHS. The PS3 sees them all and they play great.

But... the PS3 interface SUCKS when browsing the videos up on the server. All I have is a folder view and then it gives me a text list of the files in each folder.

Is it really that old school, or am I doing something wrong?

Would Twonky or some other software give me a little more "bling" on the PS3 side, maybe with cover art and some more sorting options than just folder?
 
Well hell.

Since it was DLNA compliant, I figured it would do something a little better than a basic DOS list. Maybe some setting or 3rd party stack on the WHS.

On the bright side, now I have an excuse to make an HTPC and use a nice skin, like XBMC.
 
I find it funny that I am using my PS3 more and more as a media extender from my WHS 2011 now that I upgraded the server. I am ripping and encoding everything I have, researching the best way to do those chores, the best settings for the router for this and that. Then I realize that I am still at the peril of the horrible PS3 interface for playing those files. I have gotten used to it but I hate getting used to going through 5 or 6 (I can't remember off the top of my head) layers of menus just to get to my "Videos" folder on my WHS... I think the HTPC is becoming more appealing by the day.

That is EXACTLY my feeling about it. Good quality video, embedded captioning, 6 channel audio, everything I can do to make the videos top notch, but actually picking one to watch via the PS3 interface is getting lamer (more lame?) as the number of vids grow.

Similarly, with the bigger and bigger drives, I am thinking 1 GB vs 9 GB, so what? Why not rip the whole DVD as an ISO and put it up there? Then I get no loss, all the extras, and could always transcode it from there for an Ipod or such.

That gets back to my HTPC envy. An HTPC could work directly from the ISO. Plus all the Internet connectivity.

Of course, in my moments of self truth (fortunately rare), I realize that an HTPC would really be mostly something to play with, since the PS3 interface technically works just fine.
