Upon reading this you may be thinking.....
"What?! She's not even done with Project Vash and she's doing another case mod?!"

Well that is a yes. I'll be working on two cases at the same time.
--------

Now it begins....

In the days of the Vic20 and Commodore64 being the hottest thing out there. This is when two worlds collide and we make this new case have a little bit of that old school flair.

Project Commodore will be a more simple case mod than Project Vash since it'll just be painting, cutting out a window, etching the commodore logo onto plexi, making fan grills and all that other fun stuff.

After I finish this will be a case that I am giving to my friend for Christmas.

I am currently working on cutting out the window but I have the top panel and side panel painted with Duplicolor Mirage Red to Blue.

Here's some pics of the top panel!

From the thread title I thought you were doing a commodore ATX conversion or something. Paint looks great, though. Now where's that etching how-to? :D

Well if it's any consolation, I'm still planning a Vic20 mod if I ever find my dead unit. Don't wanna scrap my live ones :D

Update!! 11/03

This is as much as I could do today before it started pouring outside.

Cut out the window and started to sand a little bit of it for the piccy.
windowpanel.jpg

And here I've layed down the primer for the mid coat to be put on tommorow.
windowpanel2.jpg

LoL nah, I ran out of sandpaper and I don't like the look of polished steel. I think the only thing I'll be polishing now is heatsinks. :p

Update November 3rd AGAIN!!!

LoL the other Nov. 3rd update was for the 2nd actually. Anyways there are a lot of pics to post so enjoy!

Cut out the Commodore logo and ready to do the frost effect on the plexi.
plexi2.jpg

Frosted (flakes): they're grrrreat!
plexi.jpg

Cut the bezle to make a turbine type fan hole (I think thats what its called)?? I've always seen it done but I just wanted to try it out for this mod lol.
turbine3.jpg

Hehe I took a dremel to that restrictive fan hole! muahahahha! So I took some mesh I had and painted it red to go in front of the fan but behind the bezle.
turbine2.jpg

And here it is with a fan! By the way I'm thinking of using bondo to cover up the rest of the vent holes that aren't useful.
turbine5.jpg

Finished painting that one windowed side panel I didn't get to finish yesterday! Yippie!
windowpanel3.jpg

Another viewing angle...Here it looks like its super deep red even though at other angles it looks like it goes from gold, orange, red, then to blue. It's some really cool stuff.
windowpanel4.jpg

I think filling the holes with Bondo is a great idea. However, it might make the area look a little bare. You may need to do something decorative above the fan.

cool... but i was expecting a c64 getting an... um... upgrade.

someday, i may do a mod to my c64 if i can't get the thing outta my closet cheap.

I agree with both ideas. Fill it with Bondo, it looks gross. Also, maybe some type of etched plexi logo, lit from behind above the fan? Maybe the "Commodore 64" name in the right font?

I also thought you were doing a mATX in a C64 shell mod. But, after seeing that paint job, I'm not disappointed at all. Looks outstanding! I'm sure it looks better in person. If youre firend doesn't appreciate this as a present, they get one slap upside the head for every person who posts here. :D

What kind of paint did you use  its soo cool!
And i would bondo the front as well, but like they both said it does need something there,,,, why didnt you just put in a 120mm fan? From a glance it looks like it would fit, would take up more space.. etc. But you could do a cool plexi thing on it, with your skills it would look great!
btw... what is this commodore?
oh and where do you get all the money to do this!?

Update November 4th!

LoL hmm...the thing is that it's the kind of door that is hydraulic and he leaves it down like 24/7 so you'd never see it. I kinda went over board with the fan but I thought that this case needed some better airflow anyways. Oh and why not a 120mm fan? No idea lol. But it's too late now :p

I've installed the etched plexi since he's not one to deal with cable management I thought it'd be a cool idea to make the plexi not be 100% clear. You can just throw wires anywhere you want except for in front of the Commodore logo lol.

Damn, the "flash" / "no flash" shots really show off that paint! I may have to experiment with some of that stuff now.

This is damn too sweet ( despite my deep hatred towards windows & neons :D )

Hehe thanks Tos! :)

Mini update I guess... not again...this time instead of modding Trigun it's the Commodore case lol I was just moving it from down to up and I guess it wanted to stay down!

Got sliced by the metal, but what should I expect?? He got it for $20 at a computer convention. Darned friggen case!

LoL mashie as much as you want me to bite the case back, I'm not doing it :p
notagain.jpg

:( wh00ps. that's why you should always be careful, and keep a first aid kit around when doing stuff like this, people. of course, Jess, you have so much experience, so i'm sure you did that. getting cut on a case sux, i'm sure (tho it's never happened to me).

might sand down the edges where it's that sharp tho...
and good luck with the rest of the work...

Thanks for the concern starhawk lol I'm not thaaat experienced, this is only my second case mod :) But yep I got a bandaid for it and cleaned it before I put it on.

UT-Jackal...I'm starting to wonder if you read or just look at pics lol it is called "Duplicolor Mirage" go to the Duplicolor site at www.duplicolor.com and under products it should have Mirage on there.

Now if you ask me again what kind if paint it is I'm going to have to go over there and make you read my posts :p and that's not a threat it was a promise!

what paint was it again? :D

btw are you working on the etching guide?

Ouch! I've got a few "case-related" cuts, just last week I accidently dropped a side panel and it fell corner first on my foot leaving a cut, week before that I took an exacto to my thumb any and thats all just last week lol.

I love the paint job, I was thinking of using some Mirage but wasn't sure. Now I will. :)

I love that window too. :)

I've been kinda busy doing two case mods to work on the etch guide lol but we'll see when everything is finished :D

A November 9th Night Update!

LoL judging from the posts on this project case, more people like the Trigun one I'm doing hehe.

Modded a bit today and so here is my progress so far!

Oh and for those of you who still wonder what I used for paint or what the cans look like here it is!
miragecans.jpg

Used wet/dry 220 grit sandpaper to sand the fan hole down and it's much smoother now.
bezel1.jpg

Made a cut into the door which moves down when you push the button and thought that I would improve some air flow :D also smoothed the edges down and painted it outside.

bezel2.jpg

bezel3.jpg

Painted the little drive bay covers and buttons!! First with flash and second is with flash off so you can see the gradient change.

I've suffered many injuries over the years while modding. Join the club! :p

Nice progress on the mod. I've seen someone else mod the same case and cut a matching hole in the sliding door. Personally, I think it looks a little strange, especially if the door is in the up position. It might look better to make the hole square and put some mesh material behind it (if there's enough clearance). Another option would be to put a nice grille on the hole in the door (you could make a custom one to go with the theme). IMO, just about anything would look better than a plain, oddly-placed hole. Other than that, great work so far.

lol well he never leaves the sliding door up, every time I saw it. It's always been down. Too much of a hassle to pull it up when you're going to let the door go down anyway?? LoL anyways there's going to be some mesh placed behind the hole in the door ;)

i am highly impressed with both cases... and am drawing inspiration from them for my own mod in the possible future. i will say nothing on it now, so as to avoid it having a similar fate to the mac mod (sorry folks...) but its current name is "high voltage"... as in the linkin park song.

I have that exact same case sitting in my basement right now. Back when Alienware was using that case me and my buddy thought it was so cool we had to have one when I built his first computer. When I built his last computer the case was relegated to the pile in my basement. I'm sure I'll use it for something eventually, might steal the mobo tray out of it for the Compaq Presario conversion mod I've been planning but never started . . . :p

"current name is "high voltage"..."
current... voltage....lol!!!
sorry... that was just funny.... not sure if he meant that....

Like I said Jess, modding is dangerous... always have a bottle of rubbing alcohol and a box of bandaids... and some drinking alcohol if ur old enough, some bawls if you're not... :D I've learned to examine the case once I get and note safe handling spots before I work on it. IF there are none, use duct tape/electrical tape to make some. some nice soft cotton gloves also help and keep the fingerprints down...

nice paint job, a girl who can etch and paint? The Perfect Woman?
nice hands btw... in due time, we'll see shots of your arms, legs, foot, singed hair, painted clothes, dirty carpet, broken dremel, dozens of Mountain Dew cans, dozens of empty bawls...

And with this symbolic cutting of the finger on the case, we initiate you into the uber elite special class of modders....
And I would to add an amendment to my previous statement "Girl Modders Rox!"

Girl Modders with a dremel... a dangerously sexy combination....

Sounds like something Zapp Brannigan would say if he was a geek and not a horrible inept Captain. LOL

Oooh that paint is sexy, think I might have to use that instead of just standard blue on my case...hmmm....

It's looking pretty good so far, can't wait to see it all put together. Don't worry about the cuts, there's more to come :) I've already gotten like 3 cuts on my current project and I've hardly done anything so far

And I totally agree about the girls with dremels thing...gotta find me one of those - my ex could turn on a computer and get it loaded with spyware...that's about it.

LOL, Siege that was so good I have to put it in my sig. :D

haha awesome I made it into a sig. I somehow knew she would one day be useful for something other than costing me money and selling my xbox :)

Aye, aye Keptin!

Long live Futurama! Bastard Fox....
Have you the seen the Simpson episode where Homer destroys a historical landmark and Burns buying up all the media outlets? Fraudcast News (#FABF18 / SI-1518)
At the begining, the public landmark is a cliff.... and a guy runs off the cliff shouting "Why did they cancel Futurama?"

And Keptin Zap would insist on the a velour dremel....
Mmm... velour
