programs wont connect to internet?

I have a strange problem that randomly occures, and I need some help trying to figure out what happens.

I am using a computer connected through a switch of a WRT54G router. Occasionally, in the morning I will go to check my email, or use IE explorer, or sign on to YIM... or do just about anything that needs access to the internet.

The problem is, IE, Outlook, Yim and other things I try wont work. Its as if my connection is down, when it is not. I run EMULE and it will still be connected. I keep AIM on, and I am still connected.

For some reason the other programs cannot get access to the internet. I try IPCONFIG /RENEW and it renews with no problem. I try flushdns and that works as well, but the Only way I can get all the other programs to detect the internet, is by restarting my comp.

Does anyone know a way I can get my internet programs to recognize im online, without always having to restart?
 
is eMule hogging all of the bandwidth and not allowing the other programs access (it is a file sharing program, correct?)?
trying killing off eMule instead of rebooting.... then try and access Yahoo IM or Outlook,etc,etc,etc....

Could be Winsock related. Dunno. I have seen problems where a comp could renew ip/dns ect. but apps could not connect. Also, any firewalls running?
 
This problem has occured, when I have Not had emule running. I generaly do run a firewall [Sygate] but that should not make my programs not be able to connect. Even when I close it doesnt work. I am not sure what causes programs to lose internet connection, but I dont know how to get it back. Even when I Reset the router button in back, it doesnt want to connect. The only thing that appears to work is restarting.
 
I'd consider running some kind of software bandwidth meter or even comparing how often the networking activity lights flash on your machine to another. You may have some kind of trojan virus hosting files in the background.
