Processor Problems?

I recently purchaced an MSI K7N2 Delta2-LSR mobo and an AMD Athlon XP-M 2500+. I installed everything and when I booted up it wasn't properly reporting my CPU speed so I figured just a FSB/multiplier problem in BIOS. When I first booted up it showed a AMD Mobile Athlon 800. So I went into BIOS and ramped the FSB from 100-133 (Which is supposed to be default for XP-M's I believe.) At the time, the multiplier was set to "Default". I left that as it was and saved and exited and when it rebooted...it was still saying it was an 800MHz chip. So I went into bios and changed the Multiplier to 10 just to start, when I rebooted this time it said it was an "Unknown Processor 1330 Mhz". From there I played with the Multiplier and when I set it to 12.5, it finally acknowledged it as a AMD Athlon XP 2200+. Notice, not mobile. So figured I'd just have to keep bumping the multiplier, which tops out at 13 on my mobo, and when I put it there and restarted it said it was an "AMD Athlon 663MHz". Which is basically a 5x multiplier.

So basically I'm wondering if it's a bad processor, or a bad mobo. I'm kinda leaning towards mobo since when I set the multiplier to 13 it is only 5x effective. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.
 
just a quirk with most motherboards. ignore the cpu string, it's not coded right

as for the multi, again, quirk. most board cannot do over 12.5x, 13x will actually be 5x, 13.5 = 5.5.. and so forth

and out of curiosity, what ram do you have?
 
I have 512MBx2 Super Talent DDR333 RAM setup on Dual Channel.

So with the processor string during post I can just ignore it? And is there a way to force the mobo to recognize the higher multipliers. I did some research and the XP-M with the Barton core (which I have) is supposed to have a multiplier of 15 to reach the stock 2500+ speed (1.8 Ghz).
 
take up the front side bus. even 166x12.5 is 2.075ghz, and if your board will support FSB400, you could run 200x12.5 for 2.5ghz, if your chip(and ram) can handle it.
 
the k7n2 has a an fsb jumper on it, may wanna make sure its in the correct position.
 
My revision only has one jumper to clear CMOS memory. I already was looking around and saw that listed on another website and ruled that out. I'll try ramping up the FSB bus later when I get home from work. Any ideas on what the VCore should be set at for that kind of overclock? I know it's default is 1.45v, so probably around 1.6-1.65?

edit: Oh yeah, don't use the sig as a guideline. That's my old specs that I'm using to post with. :)
 
you're good up to 1.65 before you're really 'overvolting' the cpu. i'd either stop at 1.75v or 55-60c under load. whichever comes first.
which heatsink do you have anyhow?

you can do a pin-mod. i don't know much about it, other than it sets the multi's to the upper range for the default, and you just connect two pins with a small wire. i'd use google ;)
 
My heatsink is a CoolerMaster Aero 7 I believe. (The one with the cylindrical fan on top) and it's keeping the 133x12.5 setting around 40c under load with the vcore set at the board default of 1.6. So it handles it pretty good. I'll look for the pin mod and that link above. Thanks guys.
 
I Prime 95'd my system last night at 166x12.5 and it didn't crash and was loading out at 56c tops. So this is stable and actually puts me at a 2600+ so I'm above what stock should be. I'll probably try 200x12.5 later, but at least I know this is stable. Thanks guys.
 
i'm gonna doubt that 200x12.5 works.

also, try not to use half multis. even on k7, they never really worked quite right. if you can do 200mhz fsb, try 200x11. you might have to bump up the voltage to get there though.
 
Just an update:

I ran it at 200x12.5 and it ran ok, a little warm for my tastes but under threshold. 67c to be exact. So for now I backed it down to 133 until I can get a better cooler on top of the processor. I'm thinking watercooling, any suggestions on what WC setup to use would be good. (Remember this board doesn't have the 4 mounting holes around the CPU socket...so it'll have to mount to the socket itself.) But also while seeing how high the FSB would go...this board has the setting for a 300 Mhz FSB...I might accept dares to try it once I get better cooling. But thanks again for all the info guys.
 
not many waterblocks these days have socket lugs iirc. i would try to help you out, but i think the best advice i can give would be to ask the same question in the watercooling fourm :p

and there's no way you'll get 300mhz. 230-250mhz is more likely though ;)
