Processor Keychain - How to Remove/Cut Down Pins

I have an AMD processor that I burned out because I didn't use a heatsink. Technically, it was my "friend's" fault (read: we're no longer friends) because he ran the CPU without a HSF. That said, I want to remove/solder or cut down the pins in order to make the bottom of the CPU smooth so I can put it on a keychain, otherwise the pins will be poking me through my pants...:eek: Any recommendations from those of you who have done this sort of thing? No smart alek remarks please, this is a serious request.

Which processor is it? If it's an Athlon64 or later (and not a mobile, meaning any processor with an integrated heat spreader, the metal plate), you can pry the metal cap off of the processor by using razor blades. Then you just carry the heat spreader, which you can drill through for a keyring.

A pair of needle nose pliers and rip them off? Then maybe some sand paper? A dremel cut off disc? I think the dremel might be easiest and quickest...maybe even one of the drum sander wheels for the dremel.
 
I use to have a p3 one(the black socket chips) and have moved on to a p4 one. Have a s775 that I need to make a keychain out of at some point as well.

For the ones I've made I sat there and bent off each pin one by one. I tried cutting them off but it left longer tips then the bending method. Not sure with the amd ones but on the older intel chips you would rip the base off the pins which didn't look good if you tried pulling them out.

In my case it took me a math class or two to get the pins out. It has been a few years.
 
Carrying around an IHS isn't very [H] imo

This proc is an Athlon Thunderbird, so no IHS. It's mostly ceramic. It looks like this
 
If you have access to a flat belt or disk sander that would probably be the best way to make it smooth as possible. That will allow you to put equal pressure on all the pins so they should sand off evenly until you have a smooth surface. Either that or use the side of a bench grinder wheel.
 
just bend all the pins one way flat.. then bend them back they will snap off.. then like flogge said take a belt sander and sand it smooth..
 
I think I did it one time using cement to grind down the pins, just pick a sidewalk and try it :).

Second, I tried bending the pins back and forth with a pair of pliers. This worked, but the previous method resulted in a significantly more "flush" break.
Third, I tried using a pair of pliers and cutting off the pins, but this was by far the least effective method.

That said, I'm going to bend the pins back and forth, and then sand down the "remaining" pins if any. The simplest method I think would be to move the processor over a piece of sandpaper. I think this will give me better control versus a belt sander or grinder, though I did think of those things first :D I'll post pics when I get a chance. I'm happy with the results so far.

I told you, just go out and use some cement as sandpaper. It works like a charm :p .
