Hey gang,

Just got my Nano yesterday and filled it up with songs. I think I tried to update iTunes afterwards and it froze, so I ctrl alt del'ted it closed. I tried again and it said Failed Installation (said this each time I tried to install it). So, skip to today, I got iTunes to install fine (I had uninstalled previous version of it too) and also installed iPod Updater. Neither one of these recognizes my iPod. I've tried third party apps too, but they also don't recognize it. It DOES show up, however, as a mass storage device in Windows ("safely remove hardware"). How can I get iTunes to recognize it? It's driving me nuts, I've spent hours now.

Try killing the iTuneshelper service and the iPodService before connecting to the desktop. Also, plug it into a different USB port so Windows is forced to re-detect the "Mass Storage Device". Lastly, try rebooting your iPod by holding down Play and Select for about 5 seconds to force a reboot. Then connect to a desktop.

You can also try this on another machine, but it already sounds as if you have a service running on your current machine that is blocking the iTunes service from properly detecting the pod.
