Ok...heres my story. I purchased a P4 processor from Sativaman84 in August before I left for school. Since I was busy with school I didn't get a chance to test it for almost a month. When I tested it I could not run windows, it would install, but when I tried to boot into windows it couldn't get past the splash screen. I then tried Linux, using a non SMP kernel (no hyper-threading) it would work. I concluded that there was a problem with the processor's hyper threading. I contacted Sativaman84 and at first he was seemed willing to fix the problem. I received several PMs stating that he was going to send a replacement. I have received no replacement, and he hasn't responded to my last three PMs. Any advice would be helpful.

what type of proc was it. I will see if I can get a hold of him and help you get a resolution.

I don't suppose Intel's warranty covers any of this...HT problems sounds like a freak issue to me, from a chance drop or bump, unless it was a rejected proc from Intel and somehow escaped to the marketplace.

are you sure thats not the motherboard? or some other component?

normally a static electronic component like that either works or it doenst work... there isnt normally a "grey area" where itll kinda work. it can happen, but its really rare...

and if it is the chip, you have nothing to worry about. He'll take care of you.
 
Yes, I am sure. I tested it in 2 systems with several different sticks of ram, when I switched to linux without hyper threading it worked fine...but Windows would not boot. I do agree that it is odd, but I tried as many different setups as I could.
 
what mother board? do you have an updated bios on the motherboard? is HT turned on in the bios of the board?
 
It was tried in both a Abit IS-7 and a Shuttle SB61, both known to work fine with my other s478 processor. I did not update the bios but did check the HT settings in the bios.
 
Did you try clearing the cmos. You should also be abnle to turn Hyperthreading on and of via the bios. There are several Bios updates for the is-7 that have to do with the prescott core. The IS-7 has 12 bios updates so check your version and update, there are a lot of fixes in them.

I have received the processor...looks good. I am currently away for the weekend but will test it out Sunday night when I get back.
 
Eh, I usually tell people that if they have problems lemme know and i'll take care of it. As well as the fact it was OEM when I sent to him not retail.
