Power issues with CPU?????

So i recently took the plunge and finally upgraded from an athlon 1333 to an Athlon 64 3000.

Everything seemed to be running great all throughout the setup but I decided to play a game of thrones and patriots and about midway through my compouter pretty much cut off. It didn't really cut off....but the screen paused for a second.......and then went black...everything still going in the case but no video.

I think I'm asking too much out of my PS unit to run the athlon 3000 and the Radeon 9800 all at once as it's only a 300w PSU but I wanted to ask everybody's opinion on the matter first.

I've heard of people running a system like yours on a 300W PSU, although I personally wouldn't recommend it... ;)

Here's a question...is your Radeon cooled? The 9800's get extremely hot without active cooling, and that may be the reason your video, but nothing else, crapped out in the middle of a game. Did everything turn back on correctly once you rebooted?
 
The radeon is actively cooled with the fan that it came supplied with. It's an MSI 128mb 9800 pro. It didn't seem at all hot when I felt it right after it went black. I rebooted and everything works perfect.


I picked up a 430w Antec today and I'm going to put that in when I get home and see what happens. :confused:
 
Well I got the new PSU installed, I must say that it's very quiet.........so quiet in fact that I now hear a poppping from my speakers that wasn't there before. :mad:

Think there is some kind of interferance with the new PSU? I even took out the sound card and tried the onboard, every once in a while it still pops while listening to mp3s. :mad:
 
Doubt that it is interference. Might just be a problem with the speakers...I had a cheap pair that did the same thing after a while...replaced them eventually.
 
so I went back to the bios........with the new PS I gave everything one increment in power higher......memory, cpu, southbridge...........etc.

Just for the hell of it as it shouldn't make much of a difference at all but it's been rock stable running prime95 and 3dmark looped since.......

Will keep monitoring it and post up.
 
ok this is really weird.................

I put my SB Live back in my system after using the onboard sound for a while. The system is a lot louder with the SB live in it..not the speakers mind you but the fan noise????????


I hvae an antec 430 true and I wondered if with the SB live the power reqs went up so the fans spin faster or something.............this is really confusing. :confused: :confused:
 
ok, so................my SB Live does not work on my Abit board at ALL. If it's in the computer it seems to lock up and run like ass. No big deal I guess as the sb live is real old anyway. Wonder why that is though. :confused:
