Hi all,

I have a build in mind for my first rig, however I'd like to bounce it off of you guys before I put everything in motion.

I've spent many hours combing for ideas on different builds. I feel confident enough to post what I think will be a good starter rig, but I'd like y'alls opinions. Some of this I have, or got for free, or I'll have to purchase new.

When I'm not using my regular PC, I'm going to swap back and forth my 1060 6GB between them. So, lets just assume that I'll be running two 1070's full time, and the 1060 18-20hrs a day. I run NiceHash now on my regular PC/1060. I plan on using that program for this purposed rig until I get more involved with the inner workings that I learn from you peeps.

At the start, I don't plan on OC'n, but I'm sure I'll reach a point where I'll be interested in doing so. If I can make back what I put into this, I'll add a new GPU here and there for a total of 6 when all is said and done.

I can run Win 7 64 or Win 10. I really haven't seen anyone make a case for one being better than the other, but everyone (using Windows) seems to be Win 10.

*Thoughts*

No one really mentions a surge protector. I would assume it would be a good idea to have one. Any suggestions if it's needed?

I'm not sure if it would be a better idea to run two PSU's instead of just one. It'll prolly be at least 6 months before i add another GPU, unless I find one on the cheap. If you think going dual PSU's, what size would you suggest? Many of the rigs that I've seen that mostly run 1070's seem to use 650's X2, but many of those are 8+ GPU's.

What do you think my soon to be peers? Any suggestions are welcomed and thanks for your time!

EDIT: I might end up messing with the GPU's voltage when I get everything up and running.

You don't need to run two PSUs with that build. Undervolted 1070s will draw around 90-115w each depending on your power limit. The 1060 will draw 60-90w depending on power limit.
 
In that case, would you lower the size of the PSU to say a 750, or 850 instead of the 1k? On the high side of those numbers, I could maybe even run something smaller?

It seems like I remember (many hours of info jumbled in my head) that PSU's become efficient when they're running 50% or more. That gave me the thought of running a lower wattage PSU until I got the point when I needed more power as I added more GPU's.

Really appreciate y'all taking the time to reply. There are technical questions like this that I have and it makes me a bit more confident to hear others thoughts.
 
It really comes down to whether you see yourself expanding. You have a mobo that can do 5 cards... if you see yourself filling those slots up, then stick with the larger supply.
