This is a strange one. I have a new client who keeps having to reset his POP settings. Something keeps changing his incoming POP server to localhost and changing his logon username to include "/*his mail server*". My initial thought is a virus...
 
virus, trojan or most likely worm

have him do an online scan at Trendmicro or Symantec
any security he already has installed is now suspect
 
It could also be a anti-spam solution he has installed like McAfee's Spameater for example.
