To be fair, $75 few years ago is probably the same as $250 now lolThink I paid 75 for it probably 7-8 years ago now. No way I’d pay 250.

I switched to Emby recently and will never look back. I installed it temporarily on my media server and played around for 20 minutes... over the next half hour I was removing Plex from everything and rebuilding my library. Lifetime subscribed and downloaded all the apps to my devices. Thanks for this. Had always meant to try Plex but never bothered. It's fucking great![]()
Is it seamless for external streaming to personal devices? Can you have users with independant history? With Plex, all I had to do was set a port on the firewall rules. Yes, as long as its set up correctly you just open the app and you stream to external devices. I just did port forwarding to an internal ip from my external, but you could use dynamic dns or something to make it simple. Is it seamless for external streaming to personal devices? I'm curious, I got my Plex Pass lifetime on sale years ago, and between that and constant ad-block haven't seen an ad in Plex yet (beyond their "Are you sure you don't want to login to every streaming service you have?" prompts). I've generally been happy with it, are there any killer features that would compel switching? It gets more use on PS5 than anything, do you have much experience with the PS5 app? I really appreciate that Plex works like most every other streaming service's app but better (yet to see a major one with the Shuffle Show/Season feature), I don't mind doing work to get things set up but I want the end-user experience to be as slick as possible. I'd definitely miss Plexamp for a lightweight mobile music player, I've got a big and well sorted music collection from a past life as a club DJ and it's one of the best-sounding and well-featured players out there, with lots of great auto-playlisting options even based on record labels or emotional vibe tags.Yes, as long as its set up correctly you just open the app and you stream to external devices. The app is just.... better imo. No fluff, no stupid stuff. Each user can have their own login. I did separate logins for each family member and each Roku device. It saves history and progress, and each person can download whatever they want to their devices.
Ive used Plex for years but 20 minutes with Emby was enough to have me switch.
Edit: Emby is also less expensive and doesnt feed you ads.
I didnt jump on it because i didnt think i needed it. What I had was enough.
But just got the email that as of April 29th, remote streaming for free users is going away. So I can't even stream my own library to myself outside the house.
Might work if I vpn to my own router, but still. More work for wife and kids.
Ugh.
May have to look at Emby.
There probably is but for me the only real difference is Plexamp. I love Plexamp.I've also heard a lot about jellyfish as a completely free version. Is there a good resource (youtube, etc) comparing the pros/cons of each?
Plexamp is nice. I don't use it much anymore though. There probably is but for me the only real difference is Plexamp. I love Plexamp.
I think it's really lame that they put previously free features behind the paywall at the same time they jacked up the price. Historically, Plex Pass subscribers got access to all the new features. Some of those features might migrate to the free version eventually. I liked that model, and I gave them some cash over the years via monthly subs to try out new features.
Plex is great software, but the new pricing is steeeeeep. I'm making the switch to Emby.
Remote play is also behind a pay wall now.If you don't transcode free plex is fine.. I think i bought this years ago for 80ish.
It works well in android auto in the cars and trucks without any cellular service. I keep 200GB of flac on my phone and a 1.3TB of it on a tablet.I really like plexamp too, but I don't know that I get full use out if it. What do you love about it Wade88 ?
I couldn't agree more. Bought a 2 bay QNAP NAS last yet for black Friday and a couple of 18TB drives. Took me a couple months to learn how to setup portainer, jellyfin and a handful of other programs, on top of purchasing a domain and getting jellyfin setup to be seen on the web, but since then it has been working a treat.Gotta say, soon as I got my NAS up using Jellyfin has been just as fine. Only downside is Samsung devices doesnt support it directly... but they always make questionable choices for what they support ahem.. Dolby
My 2024 Samsung OLED has Emby app. So did my old LG C9 Oled.My kid uses the Plex app on the tv. I dont know if Jellyfin, or Emby have apps for smart TVs.
The media disappearing thing happened to me like 1 week after they raised the price. I went with jellyfin because of that.F*ck Plex. Jellyfin FTW.
I paid for a lifetime sub a LONG time ago.... Was increasingly unhappy with all the other BS that Plex kept tacking on... they weren't fixing problems/bugs any more, only interested in adding potential revenue streams I had no interest in. Then one day a couple years ago my media library inventory just freaking vanished. All the media was still there, but Plex would no longer see the drive it was on. No support replies. Uninstalled / reinstalled, screwed with it for many many hours. Nothing could get it to recognize unless I created a new library on a different drive. I didn't feel like copying 12+ TB of data off then back somewhere (not that I had a good way to do that either, I would have had to buy a bigger external drive). Read about Jellyfin, installed it and zero issues. The interface is a basic but it's not difficult. If I have any complaints, it's the Roku app isn't great but it works. Web access fine. Have been happy with it for years.
And recently when I finally gave up and went to Win 11 (sad face) the fresh install found my media and all the metadata was intact. Easy peasy.
A few months prior to the price increase a server update f'd with my local database. I had to run a repair script from https://github.com/ChuckPa/DBRepair to get back to normal. Everything has been fine since. The media disappearing thing happened to me like 1 week after they raised the price. I went with jellyfin because of that.
the price of a new Lifetime Plex Pass will increase to $749.99 USD*."
I have my server at home and can watch stuff easily from my phone or share my library easily with friends/family without having to share my account log in information.I don't get it, I use Kodi (libreelec) and even installed Jellyfin on my docker PC for fun but never use it. What are Plex killer features?
I made a user interface the family would like in Kodi. Mix with Yatse for a remote control from android phone or\and a nice learning IR remote and a cheap (under 10 dollar) "Wireless Keyboard Mouse IR Remote Controller USB Receiver" to train the nice remote and the ir receiver from the cheap to control the PC.
