I want to buy a new shooter (not MW2). Can anyone recommend a good, fun one with a decent first person and multi-player.

Only ones I have are COD series but don't want to reopen that hornet's nest (my other games are RTS or RPG); just looking for recommendations.

Are you looking for CoD like arcade games...or more sim-like FPS?
 
Try Section 8. Despite Windows Live, the game actually is fun and worth it's money.
 
I am in same boat. I might keep an eye on Battlefield Bad Company 2.
 
Ages ago I loved the steel panther series. Then I started playing RPG's like Oblivion, Dungeon Siege, Guild Wars and Neverwinter Nights which I now find too tedious (at least for my schedule). I then moved on to Supreme Commander and tried CSS and Battlefield. From there, played through the COD series which I I loved. That's my gaming history in a nutshell.

Now I'm just looking for something new without just picking randomly. It's probably fair to say I want more of an arcade style game because I like being able to play in shorter increments without having to remember exactly where I was in the story/quests.

I saw BC2 was coming out soon. Looks interesting.
 
I never really got into BF's, but I may look into the bad company 2.

On another note, borderlands is pretty fun.
 
I enjoyed Fallout 3 alot. Especially for the twisted oldschool-future humor and the option of running free in the wasteland, bumping into wierd people and quests :)
 
If you just want to blow shit up and have mindless fun. Serious Sam First Encounter is being re-released with upgraded textures/resolution. Looks to be good, even if you have played it before.
 
Borderland sounds like it might be something you would enjoy. Its a FPS with some of those RPG elements of games that you enjoyed before, but without the tediousness.
 
I enjoyed Frontlines Fuel of War a lot, the engine has its issues but after patching it was a pleasant surprise.

well i like killing floor a lot, the group that made red orchestra put it out. Its CO-OP multiplay only basically, you can play all the multi maps single player if you want to, but it was meant for 6 players vs the computer AI. Now its a little repetitive, but arcade and fun go together a bit. Most of the weapons you have to aim to hit. You fight hordes of mutant zombies that are man made. I mainly been playing this lately, with some CSS and DOW2, and a bit of Red Orchestra Darkest Hour. As for Killing FloorThere are a few 20-35 player servers, but other than that, Rainbow Six Vegas was a blast two, but i had issues connecting to multiplayer.

I have been playing this a lot with a friend of mine and we are having a great time the two of us, I imagine twice the players will be twice the fun!

I'm lvl 44 on my solo (mostly) character now (Mordekai) and 29, i think, on my MP character (the Siren Lilith). While Mordekais bird friend in temperamental at times, Liliths ability to Phasewalk can be impressively useful and really fun. Don't get me wrong, Mordekai is fun FUN F U N to play, but going by special abilities Liliths is the most interesting.

Disclaimer: I haven't played Brick, I don't feel like it and while Rolands turret is very effective I found it quite boring to use (holds no surprises).

Anyway go play and have fun and if you find a Chimera revolver throw it my way :D
 
I haven't bought Borderlands yet. The game itself sounds great, but the PC version sounds way too ruined from porting errors, and there seems to be some balancing issues. So Im sticking with ye ol' Diablo 2 at the moment :)
Are they putting out a patch for it soon, you think?

Go buy it. PC version is ok. Just read forum how to fix FOV and keybindings and you are done. I hate consolish FPS but Borderlands is not the one.
 
Tried Borderlands last night. It's definitely fun. A little like Dungeon Siege II (with guns) meets Mad Max. Didn't really get to try coop yet, but hopefully that will be fun also.

Didn't have any problems with keybindings and FOV was ok for me (I'm on 1600x1200).

I'm not buying a 50€ game, wherein I have to repress a button every time I sprint etc., just to fix the damn FOV, because I play in my screen's native resolution.
Its that UE3, it cuts cornes bad when dealing with widescreen resolutions. I remember playing Bioshock for the first time - the game was great but I had to take breaks often to not feel nauseous :S

Other than that, I read about problems about the voicechat, problems connecting to coop, mousesmoothing, etc.
I wanna play this game, but I'm not giving the devs my money until they have adressed those basic flaws, that gets a pc-gamer really anoyed

Bind the key to fix field of view to a key you use alot like the W key so every time you move forward it resets it. Not perfect, but you wont need to think about doing it this way.

OP: Borderlands and Fallout 3 are also my recommendation. FPS + RPG type games as others have said, though Fallout doesnt have multiplayer, and Borderlands is co-op multiplayer. How bout GTA4? Just throwin it out there...multiplayer i thought was pretty fun.
