Hey guys here is my story,

Went over to someones house that has a older Dell laptop. I installed Etrust EZ Antivirus and cleaned up the computer a little bit. I reboot and no internet connection.

Everything is hooked up correctly and all modem lights are working right. I reset the modem and had it flashed.

No connection at all. I know for a fact it was not EZ trust but I uninstalled anyway adn still nothing. When I run the ISP setup disk it stops and just tells me it could not obtain a connection. The ISP told them to call Dell.

They are kinda acting like its my fault since I was the last to touch the computer but when I was installing EZ Trust the connection was not present to update the virus definitions.

I just told them to re-install network drivers. Yet to see if that worked.

Any Ideas?

Did this EZtrust thing install some kind of software firewall?

Check to see the Windows Firewall settings in the control panel are what you need them to be...

Umm - is this a dial-up connection, or Cable/DSL?

Sorry,

Its a cable connection.

No firewall. It was just antivirus. They onyl have the SP2 windows firewall which has never given them any trouble.

Start -> settings -> Network Connections (*click*), chose the Local Area Connection, right-click -> status, then click on the support tab. Is the IP something like 169.254.xxx.xxx?

Is the cable modem going through a router, or is the computer directly connected to the cable modem?

edit: You can try the "Repair" button in the status tab.. otherwise on the Network connections window, right click on the icon, disable it.. then reenable it.. it should grab a new IP..

If that doesn't work, I would disable the network connection, turn off the cable modem (wait 20 seconds or so), plug in the cable modem, and then enable the network connection..

i bet you removed a bug that broke the winsock
do a google search for winsock fix and do that

Just tried the network drivers. Everything was cool.

Here is the weird thing.

Just pinged 127.0.0.1 and google.com and they both came back with no problem and it says im connected under connections. Further proof that its the winsock problem?

Did not bring my flash drive so im gonna see if I can find a blank cd and get this fix on.

Just tried it and it did not help. Its something with the computer because Im using the connection right now on my laptop,

I've done this twice, and a thrid time with a sound driver.

I hate spyware programs they always fuck up and delete an important system file that is impossible to find/replace and then you need a full reinstall

yeah its always funing cleaning up PC's now adays you gotta do a winsock fix and a repair usually...
Get the problem fixed though?

Thats what I ended up doing. I did a system restore and everything is cool now. Apparently when you delete the EZ pest patrol root folder it deletes something pretty important. Could not figure out why the packets were coming back from google yet I could not access anything. They had corrupted the EZ trust pest patrol and firewall weeks before by trying to remove it incorrectly so I tried deleting it by removing the folder since there was no uninstall and it was not in add/remove programs. It was the free crap that they give you free with roadrunner. I restored back to before they messed with it and removed it correctly then reinstalled the antivirus and used the windows firewall.

Thanks for all your help everyone,

Zach White
