[[[[Short version]]]]: I'm looking for near frictionless pad that can come close to my super uber cheap ass wooden desk. example: I could flick my mouse in my desk and it would glide about an inch or more on its own.

Ok I'll try to describe the surface, could be some sort of wood laminate, it had like a fake looking maybe plastic thin surface thing on top of the wood table, but it was glued to it. So there was actually two surfaces making up the table the thick wood and this other surface glued on top.
My wrists wouldn't get tired after playing strategy games like warcraft3 which needs speed and precision. To keep it gliding like that I would need to clean it more often than a plastic pad which I don't mind.


[What I've tried]:
- testing with week old razer deathadder and my old logitech g5
- I have tried cleaning with hot water/shirt and/or alcohol 99% isopropyl on the pads and mousefeet
- Also test between actual mousefeet and cshyde's teflon tape on the feet
- Am I a high sensitivity user? Mouse drivers are at 6.5, no accel. tf2 is at 6.7, l4d 6

ratpad gs - medium friction, not as good as the cheapo desk, purchased 5 yrs ago but I didn't need to use it until now when my desk broke...

Razer Destructor - The closest thing so far, the problem is it's good only fps, because it glides smoothly when you do long/quick movements, but there's friction when you do small/slower movements (ex: microing units in dawn of war2)

Steelseries SX - I really thought this would be it, but it has more friction than the destructor I'm not sure why maybe it's the grainy like surface or something. Also tried the included mouse feet barely made a difference.

steelseries s&s - Glides almost exactly like the desctrutor about 90% the same, but a little more friction.

Steelseries i-2 exp. - I also thought this would be it. Maybe I'm crazy but this thing had friction. yes it's smooth when you touch with your fingers but not for your mouse, maybe mine was a bad batch. I cleaned with hot water and dried of course and even tried with alcohol... yes i tried the included mousefeet too

razer exactmat - comes close but wears out too fast both pad and mouse tape/old logitech g5 feet
Steel

razer goliathus speed - came free with my deathadder, horrible friction, feels like mud.

cshyde c4 pad - decent for small movements, but lot of friction when large movements, like turning in fps.. Maybe opposite of destructor..


[What I'm thinking of trying] :
razer mantis control or speed, steelpad qck, steelpad sp, steelpad 4d, funcpad 1030, puretrak talent/deluxe Any recommendations?
 
1- Try putting some pledge furniture polish on the ratpadz, this used to make them very slick 2- If you like the surface of the desk, how about cutting a section from the desk, since it is already broken?
 
I don't know much about mousepads but I really like my Ratpadz XT. Couple that with a bit of Pledge sprayed on, it's like gaming on ice. I can push my mouse and it'll slide right of the pad if I let it.
 
I use a func industries mousepad. Though not the smoothest surface, it is very precise and keeps my mouse fairly clean. I love it!
 
I'll give the pledge a try. Btw acarlton I should have done that! But I got rid of the table last month = (
 
You could also go to a home depot, or something similar, and check the section where the keep the materials for resurfacing countertops. These sheets of material come in variety of colors and textures, and are very thin, maybe something there will do what you want.
 
The answer may be in the mouse feet, grab some Padsurfers (think they may now be called SteelSeries Glide). Hard to beat nice feet + Icemat, I just got to tap the mouse and it glides a few inches :p
 
I dunno about all of you, but I find that a little resistance with the mouse provides for more accurate gaming. Maybe its my lack of 1337ness so i dunno...
 
I too like a bit of resistance and find that a Deathadder on my sofa is perfect.

However for the op, the least resistance you are going to get is PTFE on PTFE.
The next best is PTFE on glass.

There are a few glass mousemats that are easy enough to find, the only PTFE mousemats I know of are made by C4

the only problem with them is you need to attach them to a very clean surface and don't move them after that, or they will loose their tackiness and become bubbly and horrible (which isnt all that bad, because at $6 a pop you have another sitting in the drawer. they're basically disposable mouse pads with a surface that rivals the performance of any pad out there period). they don't have glue or tape on the bottom to stick either, its more like air pockets that suck to flat surfaces when pressed. its a good design because it won't leave residue or peel off paint or anything when removed, and they are obviously cheap to make. mice slide across these pads like pucks on air hockey tables... and even if you slip off the pad it doesnt matter much since they are paper thin. its not like your mouse falls off a cliff and takes 300 miliseconds to pick it up and get back gaming.

this is actually the best way to describe what the black handstands pad is like. it basically is a laminate with a temporary-holding bottom. the mouse surface feels just like some of those small bumpy veneer tops you see in most homes. if you can image how well your mouse slides on those kind of countertops you can see why these pads work so well (small bumps mean less friction on the mouse, and also easier for the mouse to track with it's optics)
 
Thanks spacetrader. That sounds really close to what I'm looking, gonna order one. The compusa's here in frisco closed down and the best buy here only had 2 crappy mousepads. Anyways I might check out home depot but this sounds pretty good.
