PHPBB3 Addons and Spammers

Okay, I'm going to be honest.
I'm fucking tired of PHPBB3 and all the spammers that keep registering. For example..just yesterday, I pruned users with 0 posts...300 were deleted who hadn't posted spam yet.

Now, these are our boards http://sonsofhelghan.com/forum/index.php that you can see before you register and get accepted into a group.
We have a captcha for registering, however when we tried the email activation, it worked, but nobody was receiving the emails, so we had no new members.

We need a way to keep the spammers COMPLETELY away...I need to learn how to do that, and install addons to help the site (in general) and provide future spam protection.

Help me.
 
The majority of spammers use scripts to mass register these you can stop by making your registration process different to the default. Doing this would require somebody to create a custom script for your site and most won't bother.

On my forum I have added a question/answer - that a human can easily answer and a computer can't. I also periodically change this to something else.

For example:

What the the 3 letter of the word "spammer"?
Did you cry when bambi died? yes/no
What is 1 + 1 + 5

However, this won't stop "Powered by Human" registrations, and to be honest there is very little you can do about that.

With that maybe 2 or 3 spammers register a month, so it is fairly easy to manage them, i.e. ban

How can I add the question? Keep in mind, I have no knowledge of PHP or anything of that sort, and neither does anybody who frequents the site.
 
All my forums run on vBulletin, so unfortunately I can't help you with that part of it as I have never used PHPBB in that way.

It might be worth putting a post onto one of the PHPBB mod forums, in VB adding this question is trivial so I imagine that there is also an easy way to do it with PHPBB
