Front facing speakers are a waste of valuable space (hello HTC)
Rear speakers aren't directional and not ideal.

Really the best placement for speakers is bottom firing, like on G2, iPhone etc. I wish everyone would standardize on this.

I guess you haven't seen the Xperia Z2 though?

The front speakers on the One phones are well worth the additional height they give the phone. I came from a Note 2 though, so I downsized and and can't complain about the size.
 
Front facing speakers work well on tablets like Note 10.1 and Nexus 10 since there's no size restriction and the size of display and sound volume are more suitable for group play. On a phone with size restriction and intended for single user a larger display makes much more sense since side or even back facing speaker is plenty adequate at least on Note 3 and Note II.
 
I can't stand the back firing speaker on my S3. Have to cup the back of the phone to redirect sound when watching a video. Annoying. Would prefer a front facing speaker.
 
++ for front facing. IMO, all phones should be using that setup going forward.

My first two droids (HTC Inc & RAZR Maxx) had rear speakers, and while I got used to the cupping, the sound quality wasn't great. New side placement on Note3 is a slight improvement, but it's way too easy to block the sound completely by holding the phone wrong. I could see down-facing being minimally better than side-facing like the Note has, but again you'd run the risk of blocking sound completely if you set the phone down on, well anything.

Front-facing, especially the stereo setup like HTC is using now, really seems like the best guaranteed way to ensure decent sound quality. I would be ok with giving up a little real-estate on the device to make sure I can always hear.

So I guess you guys don't mind the larger phone size and bezels?
 
I love how my phone has better sounding speakers than my built-in monitor/TV speakers.

If I actually need to use the speakers on a phone, I would prefer front facing. The downward speaker on the iPhone sucks. That said, I usually use headphones/earbuds anyways, so I would prefer larger screen/smaller bezel.
