PC Gamer?

I loved pc gamer for the free demos. There were hardly ever of bad games. I was so excited when I saw a 2004 cover featuring doom three and half life 2. It was an issue just for FPS games. Then that editor left and it went downhill ever since.

Not to mention the free ultimate strategy guides and ultimate review anthologies they would hand out. So awesome.

I personally like reading magazines on the shitter. Best place to read Pc Gamer is during a shit...imo (can't take my laptop in there with me)

Its really sad. They used to be like over 100 pages, mostly adds but still, they barely hit 80 anymore. and most of the decent entertaining writers have left. they have had like 5 different editors in the last year too. ugh

i wonder how much longer they last.

Like all print media, it's really taken a beating. Why would anyone subscribe to magazines and newspapers when they can get all of their information for free on the Internet?

It doesnt help when yuo turn over editors 4 times in 4 years. Also when the great writers for the magazine leave for Maximum PC and other media its a kick in the junk. PC Gamer has become more like reading a game forum complete with insults thrown at the reader.
 
I guessi wasn't just talking about the decline in the print media for obvious reasons, but also i meant to address the decline in the quality of that magazine as well. Back in the day I thought it was a pretty decent overview of the gaming world. Now its like they are just going through the motions. Its terrible. Writing is terrible, humor is terrible, i mean its just bleh.
 
I still have a '98 issue with a plane on it. With the caption "Up yours, Adolf!" or something.

Not too long ago I registered on their forum, I was banned within a day. :eek:

With this site/forum and other PC related sites, there's no need for that magazine really. :p

Why would you say PC gaming is dying? Correct me if I'm wrong, but PC games have long lasting MP gamers.

For consoles its different. A lot of MP gamers play that game for a specific amount of month or so, then they move onto the next one and eventually dies out like Killzone 2. CoD4 and WaW are an exception.
 
I actually just bought a subscription to PC Gamer... Iuse to read it i nthe late 90's early 00's.... then stopped for several years now. I found a subscritption for 10 bucks online....so...I said why not...I use to love that magazine.

I think there has been a huge dip in the last year... thats for sure. FWIW, desktops in general might be going bye-bye. Laptops are just too affordable now, are easier to set up (less cables, less space), and handle anything an 'everyday' user needs it to, even most casual games and MMORPG's (which are driving the market right now). The recent trend for netbooks that threatens laptops is very similar... if your $99 graphing calculator has enough power to type papers, email, make spreadsheets, etc... it makes buying a $1000 kinda pointless.

The problem with computing right now is that unless more demand for high-end components (read: DESKTOPS) can be generated (sorry, gaming alone is not enough), gaming might become a 100% console thing just out of survival. Many developers are moving over to consoles because there is better DRM/copy protection, less hacking, and the earning per copy sold is better. You plug in a game (or there is a huge chance that the next gen consoles will just use direct download for everything), and it works the same for everybody. Hey, if the next PS4 can run 1900x1200 at 100+FPS in DX11 and you can plug in a KB & mouse for FPS's...

Actually, I take it back... it has been a great year if you are a RPG/MMORPG player. Me, I cant stand the fantasy stuff... I'll stick to my FPS's, RTS's, and Sims. But I must admit to buying in on a console... I had an error in judgement and got my hands on a PS3 so I could play all the fighting games I have missed so much (I havent played since Soul Calibur on my Dreamcast and Tekken 3 on the PS). Gosh... I love it. I cant wait for Tekken 6 to come out.
 
console hardware will never be better than PC hardware. People don't want to pay $1000 for a console. But they will pay that for a computer.
 
Oh, I agree, but I dont think that will change things. PC games are better for some of us, but developers prefer consoles, and a vast majority of plug&play consumers like consoles as well because they dont have to know alot about computers to use them. As consoles add more functions (first it was blu-ray, movie box, and web browzer, next it could be word processor, TV recorder, etc...) I think more people will see them as 'entertainment alternatives' to a PC, and possibly even productivity tools.

Perhaps its time we start referring to PC gaming as either 'desktop' or 'mobile' gaming... because I think its really two markets.

I think the bottom line is that desktop sales are drying up, and that also means alot of the high-end gaming market with it. I think laptops suck for the type of gaming I like, but you can easily play Warcrack on a laptop (many addicts prefer it since then they can take their game everywhere they go)... and thats what dominates right now. So we may see more and more games set up with slightly lower requirements to appeal to the laptop crowd.

I think desktop gaming's only future will be in SFF systems, if that. The only other hope is that some program(s) that require the massive power of a desktop will make a comeback in a big way. Something that everyone will 'need', something productivity based, not just for fun, and it will make people want 'big rigs' again. Perhaps some sort of integrated virtual reality w/ 3D graphical processing needed, or holographic displays.
 
there is nothing like playing CoD on a laptop in the john... why read about playing when you can play?

I subscribed to PC Gamer for a very long time. In 2003 I stopped. I was a faithful reader since 1993, After they changed their format (around 2003) I realized it was nothing more than a rag at that point.

Once in while I'll pick the mag up at the store, thumb through it and then put it back.

Like some that have posted here, I liked a lot of the old writers. Loved Coconut Monkey.

But now, its not worth the money.

Back in the day their demo CDs were chock-full-o goodness.

I miss the old days of PC Gamer.
