I am using overprovisioning because Samsung Magic suggest it for optimization and because have seen it recommended on a couple of web sites but I read an article couple of days ago that said so long as your SSD and OS support Trim then you don't need to waste disk space on overprovisioning.

Agree/disagree?
 
If you are not using raid and you have a drive made in 2013 that is 240GB or larger then I would certainly not bother since without the over provisioning your drive is expected to last from almost a decade for 240 GB models to several decades for TB models.

Edit: Also for most 2013 SSDs (240GB or larger) I would not worry so much about overprovisioning for performance reasons either (again when you have trim).
 
I have the Samsung 840pro 256 GB so think I will reclaim my wasted disk space, thanks.
 
Over-provisioning is very nice in situations where you can't trust the user to not fill the hard drive up 99% That way if they will up the drive completely it won't struggle with garbage collection. As long as you are able to discipline yourself to keep at least 15% free space, over-provisioning isn't going to help much.
 
Yea, I see some people fill their HDDs almost full up but not me. I still have 2TB HDD that is installed from 2 years ago and it is empty so plenty of space besides the SSD.
 
Does empty space on an hdd effect the operation of a sdd in the same system?
