Working on a PC for someone, which suffered a burnt out PSU from a power surge. After replacing the PSU, everything seemed ok, except for the computer booted into windows then shut off. I checked the CPU Temp, and I was ASTOUNDED to see 95* C, so I immediately shut down and put a fan to it. The HSF was spinning and working normally, so I assumed the paste just wore out over the years. Replaced with Arctic Silver (smoothed out) and had it idling now at 45*C. Problem is, whenever I attempt to load Windows, safemode or not, it just goes black.

Safe to assume the CPU burnt out? Its on a HP computer, A7V8X Mobo. Havent worked on Socket A in years :D

either that or the mobo got fried ?

cpu's fine.. you could also try loading ubuntu on a CD and see what happens.. just to make sure that the OS install didnt get corrupted.. but the temps look perfectly normal with the new AS5..

Replaced CPU, same issue. Safemode locks up at loading AGP440.sys, same amount of time to lockup as trying to boot normally. Just goes black.

yep boards probably shot.. you can find a cheapo pcChips socket A board for around 20-30 dollars.. works pretty good i have one running my file server in my closet using a athlon XP 1700+.. been running for 7 months now without ever being turned off..

Thanks everyone. Jumped the gun and assumed the CPU was shot due to the 95* temp reading.
