Onboard Video & PCIE

I can get 1 to work or the other but not both.

In BIOS I have IGPU / multi-monitor "enabled", and my PCIE card as "PRIMARY".

With this setting I can boot into windows on my 'primary' display using the PCIE card. I however cannot find the other monitor. If I change the "PRIMARY DISPLAY" to onboard my other monitor works.

What other setting could I have missed?

I believe IGPU multi monitor is for when the motherboard has multiple integrated video outputs (HDMI , VGA, DVI all on the same IO backplate for the motherboard)

I don't think you can use both a graphics card and the IGPU without software like lucid virtu which is bundled / supported by nicer motherboards for intel cpus.

Hmm. I output from my GPU via HDMI, and have a 2nd monitor on IGPU via DVI. Win7

Yes, but does your motherboard have more then just DVI? maybe a Displayport, VGA, or HDMI?

What model motherboard?

Ok, so no one "really" knows... anyone else :D
It would help if you told us what hardware you have. Clearly this isn't the rig in your sig.

Anyway when it comes to using onboard graphics at the same time as discrete there are several seperate issues.

1: is the motherboard capable of supporting both onboard and discrete graphics at the same time (most modern ones are but some older motherboards can't run the PCIe x16 and the onboard graphics at the same time).
2: is the bios set up so both controllers are active.
3: do the OS and drivers support the use of both graphics controllers?

First you should check device manager and make sure both adaptors appear there (possibly appearing with an error but at least appearing). If they don't then you have to fiddle with bios settings.

Then there is the issue of OS and drivers. MS used to support multiple different graphics controllers driven by different drivers but they removed that feature in the new WDDM display driver model introduced with windows vista. The new model only allows multiple graphics controllers controlled by the same driver.

IIRC in theory you can force install the old "XPDM" drivers on vista/win7 but if you do you will lose DX10+ support and it's hardly a well supported configuration.

There is a third party solution for using recent Intel graphics at the same time as recent nvidia/ATI cards called "lucidlogix virtu". AIUI some motherboards come bundled with virtu and you can also buy it seperately from lucidlogix.

On the AMD side iirc you can use AMD onboard together with AMD discrete using AMDs drivers but I don't belive there is a good soloution for those using AMD onboard with NVIDIA discrete.

Depending on what hardware you have it may well be your best option is to just buy a dual head graphics card and ignore the onboard.

Thank for taking the time to provide an in-depth answer.

CPU: Pentium Processor G3420 3.2 GHz LGA 1150
MOBO: ASROCK | B85M-ITX LGA1150
GPU: XFX AMD Radeon HD 5450
Display 1: Dell 30"
Display 2: ASUS 24" 16:10 (just making clear it's not 1080)

In Device Manager I have both the Discrete 5400 Series driver and "Video Controller (VGA Compatible).

As I said both work, just not together. I also tried updating the driver (onboard) numerous times and it never completes -- not sure if that could be an issue.

I already have a 270x I can throw in there but I was trying to unload all my current gear, and gaming gear as I'm taking a break on gaming until end of year or so when the new intel stuff is out... worst case scenario I chuck this in there, but i'd love to not need it.

Right, so windows is seeing the hardware but you are running into the problem that WDDM requires all display adaptors to use the same driver.

As I said in theory you can use XPDM drivers (that is drivers intended for XP) to get hetrogenous multimonitor but you will lose recent versions of directx, lose aero and i've no idea how well it will work in practice. Also I'm not sure if XP drivers for haswell integrated graphics even exist.

As I said there is a third party soloution from lucidlogix which allows both onboard and discrete to be used together but it costs money (unless your motherboard vendor bundles it but I doubt a low end buisness focussed board will) and i'm not sure if it's compatible with your processor (they only list the i series, not the pentium or celeron models, I don't know if that is a real requirement or just an ommison)

LOL I mentioned Lucid Virtu software in my first post... but he wrote it off as "no one knows anything".

Sorry, but I have absolutely 0 interest in using 3rd-party software.

So, yes. I am writing you off as "not knowing" how to do what I want to do ;)

Thanks for playing, and making comments... come back again.

The 270x is going in I guess :D
