I know this is a PC forum, but since I didn't see a Mac forum, I decided to post here. Anyways, here goes it. I have an old Power Mac G4 that I upgraded the ram a little bit on, after it being given to me by my sister. However, it locks up during startup, so what I would like to do is wipe/format the whole system clean and install a new OS for it. The maximum OS's that it supports are: Mac OS X 10.4.11 "Tiger" and Mac OS 9.2.2. Unofficially it also supports Leopard. Anyways, I'm completely Mac Illiterate...I know nothing about them, and this is my 1st one. Is there any way I can easily restore it to it's original state? Or if not, what should I do about it? Do I have to buy an old OS for it? Or is there one I can download? Any help would be greatly appreciated because I have no idea what to do with it, as it is now, not working. Thanks guys!

Do you know the model number? This would help to make the decision as to whether or not to keep it. If it were one of the say 1Ghz DP models, it would be worth reformatting, dumping RAM into and keeping for a kids PC.

The best Mac games are those for OS 9, so there's no real reason to upgrade the CPU, and even the old 400 MHz G4s are adequate for web surfing.

^^ This. I have a dual processor 1GHz G4 with 1.5GB of ram and a radeon 9800 in it. Put 10.5 on it and it still moves quite well. You said 10.4.11 though so I am thinking it is something slower.

I don't know the exact model number but will post it later on. It's only a 533 Mhz G4 but it's actually pretty fast, even when surfing the web and things like that, and even when starting up. I just need to get a new 512 meg ram module (or more) because the one that's in there now causes it to occasionally lock up (I found out after the last posting).. which isn't too expensive.

Can you just buy copies of Mac OS (whatever version) like off ebay or anything? Or is that a bad idea? Thanks guys.

You can, yeah. Mac OS doesn't have any kind of activation system. Or serial numbers. Or keys. Or anything, really.

533mhz isn't too bad for standard surfing, but anything with flash content or streaming video will probably kill it.

But it will take 1.5GB of RAM, and PC133 is cheap, so why not, fill'er up!

Also it is stated that this Mac can be configured for 1 or 2 533Mhz G4s. You may also find one of those for cheap, drop it in, and that with 1.5GB of RAM gets you a pretty decent surfing machine (though will still probably have some streaming video issues above 320p).
