Odd question about XBOX 360 serial numbers...

I am at my wits end here...

I purchased an xbox 360 from walmart and decided to bring it back after a little less then 2 weeks. Well I am having the hardest time in the world doing this and here is why

Apparently, and I have no idea how it happened or why, my serial number on the sales receipt is off by a single number from my console. So its like this

Console serial number reads XX9XXXXXXXXX
Sale receipt reads XX0XXXXXXXXX

Now this seems odd to me because I am uncertain I have ever seen the SN#'s for any piece of consumer electronics exact with the exception of a single number. I guess the idea that I somehow came across a system so close in SN# to the one I purchased seems strange to me but could be legit...

So I am wondering if anyone knows how or has an idea of how these SN#'s are generated? My only thought is that if I can figure out just how likely and/or possible it is for this to have happened I might be able to do something. Like say if the odds are astronomical or something.

I am at my wits end with this and walmart just treats me as though I am a con artists and even the assistant store manager told me straight to my face that the problem was that that wasnt the console they sold me, but I assure everyone including them it is lol...

So really does anyone have ANY advice for me? I dont even know where to turn now, I got the contact info for the marketing manager because even the store manager could not help me(or so she said) but I havent called him yet because I'd like to get some ammunition first.

Oh and lastly but certainly not least when I opened the console for the first time it already had a copy of "Call of Duty 4" in the disk tray, no box for it no nothing just a disk for it in the tray.....clearly walmart muffed something but I cant seem to get them to own up to it or just resolve it already :(

well thanks for any help anyone might be able to provide!

So basically what happened was someone bought an Xbox 360, swapped it, and returned it. Oddly enough it doesn't surprise me that Walmart just repackaged it...still though, something is off on that.

I was told that if that happened the other person would not have been able to return it as I am unable.

Also when they scanned the console bar code at the time of purchase wouldnt it have put the right one on the slip? According to the store manager she checked to see if maybe it was hand typed(and thus done in error) but according to the manager they can and DID check for me and the number was scanned in and not hand typed.

They also told me to try calling microsoft which I did knowing I would get no where cause its clearly an issue on their end. I did it just so I can say I've been working with them to resolve this should anyone important ever ask.

My plan is to complain up the ladder until someone at that damn company does the right thing but after my chat with the store manager I am starting to lose hope.

So for the sake of argument IF the number on the receipt was scanned off my purchase and is different from that of the SN# on the console is it possible that a similar barcode was elsewhere on the box and was accidently scanned? If so does anyone know where such a mystery bar code might be?

I guess from walmarts perspective it looks bad for me but this IS the console I got from them and I really cant explain this to them....lol.

Unfortunately you appear to be SOL since it is your word against theirs and the receipt is the key to this transaction. I don't know how got a different SN on your receipt at the time of purchase but you should have taken the system back as soon as you found the game in the drive and saw that it had been opened before. Going through corporate there is a slight chance of getting help but I am doubtful.

Well it was bought as a gift and once I was talked into letting my sibling open it early we discovered the disk and what not and the following day I went to return it and started this journey.

I guess in the future I will pay A LOT more attention to this sort of thing and all I can assume is that maybe they took it back and shouldnt have before, just tossed it back behind the glass, then I tried to buy it and it wouldnt scan right(the SN# issues) and instead the person at the counter just scanned another so it would complete the transaction? I dont remember this happening but I wasnt paying THAT much attention at the time of purchase(its xmas time after all) and if it was done it could have been done very quickly without me realizing anyways.

I got the shaft and now I guess my only option is to ebay the thing cause I did need that cash back though now I wont come close to what I just paid a couple weeks back I bet....god I hate walmart lol. Only reason I got it there was cause every other place was sold out :(

This is really to bad, have you checked all over the box for another, similar, barcode? It also seems like someone must have gotten away with returning it without the checker looking at the SN (unless it was an inside job) so maybe try a different Walmart and you might get lucky.

Well even if you keep the console, there was something wrong with it, otherwise why would it be returned? Also let us know the MFG, and if it has HDMI, and what model it is.

Welcome to Walmart you can return anything to them most of the time even without a receipt. Also welcome to America where 1 asshole can and will mess it up for nice people. So take it to different stores until you get what you want. I'm sure there's more than 1 around you if you in any major metro area. Go late at night too when they got all the idiots working there. *Edit* Why are you trying to return it anyway ?

well my friend suggested I ebay the receipt and I thought what the hell lol.

I also included the call of duty 4 that was in the disk tray along with my personal copy of that anti walmart documentary :)

stupid I know but whatever....just gonna try to have fun with it now.
